'88 Convertible - starter not getting power
Turn the key, a relay clicks in the instrument cluster, but nothing from under the car. Roll starting starts fine, thank goodness there's a hill both at home and at work.
First time this happened, disconnecting/reconnecting the battery restored normal starting. a few days later, problem repeats, and no joy with the easy "fix." I'm thinking that the anti-theft relay is stuck. High humidity issues inside the car due to a leaky top has played havoc with various electronics over the past couple of years, they usually go away when I get things dried out. I'll rebuild/replace or bypass this darn relay if someone could just tell me where to find it. Suggestions for other potential causes, and their fixes would be gratefully appreciated. |

For the life of me i cant remember the location of it. I had the same problem with my first Vert and this was the exact reason why i had to get it towed 150kms Edit: Ah Ha if i remember correctly to disable the alarm you need the unplug the Gold colored box behind/under glove box on S4s and unplug the wide white plug on the cpu on S5s behind the kick panel on the drivers side |

Do you have a copy of the wiring schematic for your model year FC? The following is based upon my 91 FC schematics, A-2 and T-2 (Pg Z-26, Z-27, and Pg Z-142, Z-143). I would recommend checking the following components based upon your symptoms: 1. Starter Cut Relay, located along the driver side firewall at Connector A-02. 2. Body CPU, located along driver side kick panel next to the fuse box (S5 only, I believe), at Connector T-01. 3. Starter (Clutch) interlock switch at Connector A-07. 4. Inspect Ground and Positive cables for kinks, breaks, cuts, or corrosion from the battery to the starter and chassis ground. Again, this information was taken from a 1991 RX-7 wiring diagram manual. Your results may differ for the 1988 model year. BTW, does the car's SECURITY light act unusual? Does it have a weird flashing pattern or none at all? That is a dead give-away for a bad Body CPU in an S5. Best of luck on your repairs! Please keep us posted on your progress. Cheers, George |
i have relays that usually cure this, the problem is resistance accumulating in the starter cut circuits due to age. pm me if you want more info.
