Picked her up last night

Hey guys I picked up my 89 GTU last night and i love it. The ride is kinda harsh, but i might change the struts so it should be all good. The only other thing that is bothering me is the stick gets warm, and when it does it kinda smells inside, like the plastic is melting, what can i do??? Do you think the heat shield might have fell off or something???

Thanks for all your help on the other topics i posted.

It sounds like your inner & middle shift boot have deteriorated which allows heat to come in from the trans tunnel and start eating away at the vinyl boot in the interior.

To check, pull up the base around the shifter and look underneath. You should see 3 rubber boots at the base. If you can see the end of the shift lever in the tranny, your boots are shot.

You can get the parts to replace them for about $65. While you have that stuff out, you may also want to replace your shifter bushings.

Just pull the leather part off you mean??

Thanks for the tip.

I had the same problem but in addition my stick was loose & sloppy. When I removed the shifter boot found the rubber boots (3) were pretty much disintegrated. I ordered the new boots & shifter bushings from mazdatrix.com. This illiminated all the heat and the sloppy shifter. You may not need the bushings but they to seem to be a common problem and if you are in there it would be a good time to replace everything. Easy job, you can do everything sitting in drivers seat.

You pull up the whole piece the leather is connected to. It should come up without a lot of force.

Yup, you can just pry the whole plastic surround right up. It is held in place by 4 metal clips, just be gentle and it will pop right off.
