How to make a beefy N/A? Need your recommendations!

Ok. Here are my plans so far. What do you recommend to tweak them or make them better in any way?

-Wolf 3D v3.0 or v4.0
-RB dual exhaust header w/ some new hi-flo mufflers. Fab my own piping in between.
-K&N cone filter w/ cold air box
-Port and polish manifold
-Electric fan kit

What am I forgetting? I still have to strip off the smog control stuff, but that can wait until I park it for the winter to begin the body work and drivetrain mods.

I need first-hand examples of what works and what doesn't. Help me out guys, I don't want to waste any money on expensive mods that don't work.

Lend me your vast knowledge O Mod-gods! :)

Pulleys
bored out TB
lightweight flywheel, better clutch
Why not port the engine while your at it?

Audiofight 11-09-01 10:32 PM

Pulleys

Where do I find a pulley set for my N/A? Didn't really think about those.

As for porting the engine, I don't want to mess with it. It has quite a few miles on it according to the odometer. The strange thing is, the psi ratings are still very high for the amount of miles it claims to have on it.

97-103 psi on all four chambers w/ 161k miles on it.

If/when it blows, then a ported version is going in.

The flywheel could happen. The clutch, it is pretty much new and I don't see the point in replacing it until it smokes, but it is now on the list.

-Wolf 3D v3.0 or v4.0
-RB dual exhaust header w/ some new hi-flo mufflers. Fab my own piping in between.
-K&N cone filter w/ cold air box
-Port and polish manifold
-Electric fan kit
-Lightweight flywheel
-Pulleys

Do the throttle body mod (http://k2rd.freeservers.com/FC3S/TB/tb.html). I did it earlier today to my car and I felt a difference throughout the power band.

Audiofight 11-10-01 06:55 AM

No....I didn't perform that yet either.

Another to add to the growing list. I may conduct that one out here in the parking lot.

Thanks for the help.

mazdaspeed7 11-10-01 11:12 AM

If you want a fast n/a, youll need a better clutch. I have a brand new stock clutch that was put in with the rebuilt engine 9K miles ago. It slips, a lot sometimes. I cant do a burnout at the strip b/c the clutch slips. And the clutch was installed right, it just cant handle much more than 200 bhp.

Ya, ask Mazdaspeed7, think he has the fastest NA on here. But I will be catching up right quick like :D

SuperchargedRex 11-10-01 01:27 PM

How about losing the air conditioning and power steering? That'll reduce both weight and parasitic drag. And put your car on a diet: get rid of the toolbox, case of oil, all that crap that adds weight. Rule of thumb: 100lbs = 0.1sec in the 1/4mile

Dont count on it. Who said I was done anyways?

Im actually doing a few more things this coming week. My goal is to be the first n/a FC to be in the 13's on stock ports. Then im porting the motor:D

van_fc3s 11-10-01 02:46 PM

just wondering,
-how fast is your n/a ...0-60, and 1/4 mile time?
-what mod's do you have?
-is yours ported? (street port?),
-how fast do you thing a street port 13b engine would be?

thanx, hearing yours goes fast really gives me some hope that na can acutually go fast..
thanx again

Ryde _Or_Die 11-10-01 04:27 PM

I will answer what I think I know...He is not ported (yet) & hasn't been timed at all but thinks he is in the 14s. He has true-dual exhaust, electric fan(I think), intake(cold-air box), 550cc 2ndaries & TII fuel pump(?). Not sure what else but if my memory is working right he has those. He'll answer soon here, hes just not as quick as me. See I beat you at something :D

Max7 11-10-01 04:51 PM

I like that, trying to max out a stock motor before you port it, always fun to see what you can scrape out of one.
cept for me its in an FB, but same N/A idea :)
I think I about maxed mine out, with the stock 6 ports and sleeves still functional.
the new project is an 89 stock block and internals in the FB :)

electric fan instead of pulley driven.

Rotary Performance sells and underdrive pulley for the alternator, I think, but that's about it. Go to http://www.RX7.com

Times, dont know yet. Low 14's, im sure. I raced a 300Z TT with intake 0-100, and lost by a car and a half, and I was dealing with timing problems then. Just a few days ago I had a little run with a 96 or so Cobra, 90-125 or so. I was behind him, but he did not pull an inch on me, and towards the top of 4th, I started inching closer to him.

Heres my current mods:
cone filter
TB mod
ported intake manifold and black plastic elbow
RB dual outlet headers-->true dual exhaust
all emissions removed, including air pump
6 port sleeves removed
electric fan
UD pulleys, main and alternator
TII fuel pump and 550 cc secondaries
A/c and p/s removed
Crane Hi-6
NGK plug wires
timing advanced
some weight reduction...~2600 lbs
coilovers

Coming within the next week:
Mustang MAF sensor(the 73mm hot wire type:D)
bored out TB
nylon inserts to smooth out the 6 ports
a little more work to the intake manifold

mazdaspeed7 11-11-01 12:18 AM

Pulleys, I would recommend the RB pulleys. The construction is top notch, as is fit and finish. Theyre also cheaper than the RX7.com pulleys.

A good street port can add as much 30-50 hp, depending on how far the street port is taken. It all really depends on who ports the engine for you. And the gains will be smaller if you dont use TII rotor housings and/or get the rotor housings ported too.

Node 11-11-01 12:35 AM

whats TB?

and btw what kinda exhaust you got, custom w/ RB headers?
and what model and year
also you think it would matter if PS and AC where kept on?

mazdaspeed7 : by putting heftier injectors, and TII fuel pump.. do you find the car running to rich? or you plugs get gummed up easily... I was thinking of doing that mod to my N/A rx.. but wanted to know a little more about it first.. what the downsides are ?

Drakk0r 11-11-01 02:51 AM

I was gonna start a new thread to ask a question, but its on the same topic so I'll just ask you peoples.. I'm thinking about dumping my race pipe and N1 combo for a Dual outlet header to 2 racing beat mufflers and a costom pipe in between (true dual setup). I was wondering.. How much difference would that be over what I've got now? Anyone do anything similar? I also have a crazy idea of using dual outlet headers straight to the rear of the front wheel wells. Thatd be fuckin loud as hell and throw 5 ft flames.. But might draw some unwanted attention... Anyway.. what do you all think of going to a true dual setup?

Go w/ side pipes like on 69 vettes, cobras and vipers
huge pipes w/ swiss cheese heat covers, and huge 3" tips, hell have 3" all the way.
they call ya rice
tell em to look at a cobra, theres are like 4.5" or bigger, fucking huge

jizzajuice 11-11-01 03:08 AM

True duel exhaust will give you a good 30+ hp. However you lose low end torque. For everyday driving that might get annoying as on hills... it's tough to get started. *Very touchy* And one more thing, NA's get pretty dang loud when you're modding out the exhaust and intake. I feel that I have to turn upt he music a little louder than usual on days where I'm drivine more aggressive. Oh well, hope this helps and good luck!

Peace,
AJ ^_^
