Gas efficiency?

What kind of gas mileage would I expect out of a 1986 RX7 GXL? I imagine that the GXL/GTU have similar MPG rating as well.

vaughnc 09-01-01 08:11 PM

Sticker's said 16/23 but it's really around 19/26 if you shift around 3200 rpms :)

80'StyleFC 09-02-01 03:29 PM

what about for the t2 ...i have an 89 t2 and i can get about 250miles on a full tank is that normal?

vaughnc 09-02-01 05:29 PM

Hmm... 15.6MPG is about right for spirited city driving. You could up that to 19MPG if you shift around 3200 rpms.

On my 91 TII on a 600 mile trip I averaged about 19MPG and that was 25% city and 75% highway.

fc3s.org 09-02-01 05:45 PM

In my 91 vert (N/A) I can usually get around 400-425 miles on a tank, where as on the 86 TII, I get around 125-150 :)

gvink 09-02-01 06:30 PM

judging from these posts, clearly the infamous 3,800 stumble was Mazda's way of improving fuel economy by discouraging higher revs ...

:)

On a slightly related topic, does anybody else have a fuel gauge that drops like a rock for the first half tank (falls to halfway with about 80 miles on the odometer)? Then it seems to level out, and the last time I checked I got around 18 mpg on my last tank of gas (87 GXL NA). Does that sound about normal?

CanadianRX7 09-02-01 08:38 PM

i sure do
i filled my car up and then drove it hard for a day and then it went down like 1/6 at tank already and then i go fill it up again and it only took $4 of gas
gas is 84.6 cents a litre here for 89 octane

mazdaspeed7 09-03-01 12:08 AM

I get about 330 miles a tank, or about 22 mpg. I can get as high as 26-27 mpg, but what fun is that?:D

Same here
65 liter tank and when it is just above E it only takes 40 liters.

The Ace 09-03-01 05:53 AM

Damn you and your humongous mpgs.....:D

I cannt get anything more than 11-12mpg, and thats without any mods

Probably I need new spark plugs, and a good ATF session, and I still have the stock air filter :o, and I........;)

Not sure how you are getting that...
With a 65 liter tank and my gauge just above E I put in 40-45 liters when I fill up (meaning I am using 2/3rds of the tank) and shifting at 3-4000 rpm and not hotfooting it at all and I get 180 miles. If I went to empty.. maybe I would get 250-275 miles.

Mint condition 88 convertible, 45,000 miles, always serviced at the dealer..

No mods..except K&N filter.

WOW!!! In my '86 N/A I usually get around 400-425 KM on a tank!!! Terrible gas mileage...

punkncat 09-03-01 11:42 AM

I get about 14 out of mine around town.Shifting below 3000 can impact this very much.

Suparslinc 09-03-01 12:03 PM

wow, you guys get crappy gas mileage.

My '90 GXL averages about 19 mpg. sometimes it dips to 15 or 16 but thats rare. Its mostly hiway, but some hard city driving too.

On a long hiway trip I average over 23, and thats at 80-90 mph.

So on a full tank I can stretch it out to about 310 before the light comes on, but then I still have around 3.5 gallons left.

Do the math and I get 350 miles per tank.

All I have a RP Bonez racepipe and presilencer, which, believe it or not, actually DID help fuel efficiency a little.

i calculate my mileage almost every time I fill up, then record it in my records

dcamcoTII 09-03-01 12:58 PM

I get about 150 miles out of a tank on my 87T2--bout time for a tuneup tho.

vaughnc 09-03-01 01:04 PM

Well I had the 60K service done about 2500 miles ago.

I was planning to adopt the following maintenance schedule as well to keep her running good:

Oil change - every 2,500 miles
Spark Plugs - every 15K miles
TuneUp - every 15K miles

That should keep her nice & pampered. Gotta give love to receive it :)

Driftfc3s 09-03-01 01:06 PM

Damn! I usually get only about 275 miles a gallon on my 90 vert! And that's Highway miles!

80'StyleFC 09-03-01 07:25 PM

how much gas does our tanks hold??? i have 89 t2

The Ace 09-04-01 03:55 AM

TII: 72 liters, NA '89-'91: only 70 liters

jimwww 09-04-01 10:40 AM

65 liters for 88

65 liters for 88

80'StyleFC 09-04-01 01:54 PM

for us U.S. people 18 gallons? when the gas light comes on how many gallons would i have left before the car is drained completely?

FlyGuy2000 09-04-01 03:24 PM

man my empty light never comes on, it's probably broken. but i get 15 mpg with city driving. never taken it on highway for long periods of time so don't know what it does there...

dre_2ooo 09-04-01 03:40 PM

When the fuel light comes on......The owner's manual says :
"Approxamately 2.9 US gal." Thats about 43 to 55 miles left (15-19 mpg)

I'd say around 3 gallons.
