To those converting to a solid rear axle.
 

Who has any info on doing something like this? I've seen many people suggest this conversion for benefits in traction and many that just simply need a stronger rear end than what comes stock on the car.

Has anyone suggested an axle that matches the length of the stock axle? How much alteration needs to be done so that your suspension can connect in the correct places?

I might not have phrased all of this correctly but I think the idea gets through.

If you're worried about strength, instead of a live axle you can use the ford 8.8 IRS that came in the newer Lincolns and Mustang Cobras. With a custom set of 300m axles you'll pretty much have a bullet proof rear for drag and still enjoy all the benefits of independent rear suspension. I've done a couple of these in Miatas and the latest one in a Honda S-2000.
As for the live axle conversion it can be done as I did with my TII some time back. It's not just a simple conversion. Your best bet would be to check out your local drag racing chassis shop for assistance.

funny you said that... rather then the RX7 axle in my miata i went with the ford 8.8 you spoke of. I felt it was time to ditch the stock one at about 180rwhp (tuned to 18psi later) w. the stock miata setup. I know i was going rotary the second i had some nice 12 psi pulls in the miata.

this setup is great and easy to replace should it ever need to be done.

Oh i went w/ the axles too 300m (should handle a good 700hp..should traction be available at that point :) )

How much work was involved with that? There is a white V8 FC Rx7 around town that I'm gonna talk to as soon as I can catch him. He's changed the whole drive train in his car and I need to see if he wants to help me out when it's time.

to make a ford to mazda hub is about 6-650.oo (like i had made)
then you need to think about the rear plus a rebuild and or gearing of choice
then labor.........

I think there's a guy in the Columbus area that works on 7s. Hmmm. I don't mind doing the swap myself if I have someone that knows. But if I need to I'll pay someone else for it. Got any web address or phone # on the other guys? Or would it turn up in a search?

I've got a 1990 Ford Mustang GT 8.8 with a 4 link suspension. Davinci Motorworks in Belleville Illinois will do the conversion ver inexpensive, give them a call 618-222-1201. Ask for Ronald.

First time at the track, was able to cut a few 1.55 sixty foots.

Okay. Serious post now. How much torque will that rear end hold? Do you enjoy a solid rear end over the independent rear the FD comes with? So when you buy springs and shocks you're buying FD parts up front and ford parts in the rear? http://www.newcelica.org/forums/imag...lies/cwm13.gif

It will handle any amount of rotary torque you throw at it:) Mustang guys "Bob Decker"are running 8 second quarter's with it. It doesn't handle like the stock irs, it's a straight axle. What do you expect? It handles good though. I still use all stock FD springs and struts.
