Metal gaskets for the 20b TB & upper to lower intake manifold connection?

Does anyone make metal gaskets for the 20b TB and upper to lower intake manifold connection?

bcool 09-24-07 12:31 PM

There is an OEM meatal gasket for the TB to UIM. Well at least i just got the gasket for the FD. As far as the upper and lower gaskets... the closest thing i've seen is the thicker white ones made out of the heat isolating compound.

bcool 09-24-07 12:32 PM

I should note that i was using the FD TB also.

I wish someone made them out of copper.

GT1-20b, think you could get some intake flanges made to fab custom intakes off of? I'd like to try my hand at a couple ideas, and would be interested in some aluminum flanges.

I doubt I'm the only one. Any chance? Price? Turnaround time?

thanks
ryan

I'd be interested in one also. Not that I'm looking at this moment but it is a future project I'd like to tackle. I'd pick one up on availabilty and let it collect dust until I'm ready to use it.

patman 11-29-07 09:03 PM

if he cant, i can, i will let him post first tho.

calculon 11-30-07 10:53 AM

I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that nobody doing this is going to want to retain the exhaust recirculation, so it should be pretty simple. . .just intake ports and bolt holes.

Post your cost, if GT1-20b can't beat your price, or doesn't think it'd be worth his time, then it would save him and us some time.

Thanks
ryan

on the intake and TB gaskets all I can get are paper ones from Mazda.

Anyone who wants one, I've had these in stock for years !
Price is $ 55.oo ea. + freight.
Shipping is a bit hi on singles as I have to sandwich it in a long piece of wood to protect from bending.

/ Ramy : If You want to get a GB going, that would be great !

I've had Aluminum Intake Flanges made up for years too.
We use these all the time, so I always keep a fair # of them in stock.
All CAD and cut on Water Jet.
Made of 1/2" T-6 Al.
Below are some examples.

I also keep in stock all types of emission block off plates.

Stupid non-educated question - what is the advantage of metal gaskets over the OEM paper ones? Don't the paper ones inhibit heat transfer? Does the copper seal better? If so, doesn't the surface have to be perfectly straight?

I second the "Carlos is the man" comment!

patman 12-08-07 11:24 AM

the only advantage i can think of is reusability.

And reliability... If you do a quick search in the 3rd Gen section for "paper gasket" or "LIM gasket" you'll see the LIM paper gasket Mazda used in the '93s was prone to wearing out, leaking, and eventually blowing, leaving ppl w/ crazy hunting idles. And they weren't the most fun to replace. In '94+ FDs, the LIM gaskets were metal (standard).

3rd Gen guys have also resorted to metal gaskets (available only through Mazda Japan) for the front cover gasket.

Not all the 94's had metal. Mine (build date Sept 1993) had the paper gasket for the LIM and metal for the UIM. The reason mind had the metal upper was because of a Mazda dealer doing the factory recall for the vacuum lines many years ago.

T-Von, you know, you reminded me of something important. The rule is, there is NO hard & fast rule for '94s. Midway through production, a LOT of things changed. Some '94s came with '93 weaker R1 wheels. Others did not (and came w/ the stronger '94s). Some '94s came with R12; others came with R134-A. Some '94s came with a paper gasket; others came with the metal one lol.

And just to complicate things, where you are on that spectrum has NOTHING to do w/ your build date (it's prob. related to the batch yours was produced in, and who knows how you can track that info down), as my FD is a LATE '94, and it came w/ R12 and the weaker R1 wheels. Go figure ;)

So yea, thanks for the reminder!

Damn that's wierd. You car is newer than mine and I have the r134a.

FDNewbie 12-17-07 10:19 PM

I'm tellin ya...it's not by build date. It's by batches that were run at different (outsourced) third parties at different times.

87GTR 05-29-11 04:54 PM

does anyone still sell copper LIM gaskets for 20B?

t-von 05-30-11 02:18 PM

^ I cut all my own gaskets out of the grey gasket paper from Autozone. Works just fine!
