Ignition modules
 

I've been investigating an alternative to using the LS1 coils which seem to continuously reported as having problems. I have the LS1 coils on my RX8 with an E6X with no problems, but I'm researching anyway. This is for a racecar, so I need to remove as many possibilities for problems as I can.

Does anyone have any experience with the AEM twin-fire ignition? It's listed here: http://aempower.com/ViewCategory.aspx?CategoryID=78 as having an option for 8 channels of output, which would work for the 20B presumably. As seems to be standard for AEM, I can't find shit on their website regarding anything remotely technical or a wiring diagram or anything similar.

I really don't want to spend $1k on MSD DIS-4 boxes if I can avoid it, but would also like to upgrade from the LS1 coils before they give me problems!

Any thoughts?

I have one of the original AEM C2Di units. It NEVER Worked. I dropped the ball and didn' try to get it waranteed, so I have a $400 POS laying on the floor in my garage.

I will NEVER use another AEM product.

Were you using the 8 channel as an amp/igniter for 6 individual coils? Did it just not work period? It's very competitively priced, as I can't seem to find any other modules even close the price range that support 6 discreet channels.

The first and second generation AEM amps had fuse problems. They supposedly took care of it. I have a new style unused 8-channel that I would be willing to sell at a discount if you're interested.

I ran the AEM 8 channel box for a while . I went through 4 of them and they allways were covered under warrenty.
Now i am running LS7 coils. They are like ls1's buy a higher spark output. I picked them up off of ebay. A set of 8 plus wiring harness for $180. We'll see hot they hold up as I make more power.

IronMdnX - I was reading on the AEM forum that the LS2/7 coils require a 5/12v square wave trigger instead of the ground which the LS1 coils use. Did you have any issue getting these to work? Are you using an E11v2?

i dunno dude, for 600 bones i would think you could get a better setup than those coils. hell you could always run a setup like mine, it didnt cost me squat, makes stable spark at 7k rpm and 16psi every time

Aren't you running the Microtech with the internal igniters? I finally found the part #'s for the LS7 Mitsubishi-made coils which are supposed to be rock solid at big power levels, so will give those a try. I can get them for Under $30/pc and they have internal igniters!

I am using an AEM ECU. You are able to configure if it is a rising or falling trigger in the ecu with jumpers. The coils I have are GM Number 12573190. they are +5/12v trigger.

Ah, thanks. The E11v2 has leading and trailing separately configurable in software as rising or falling edge which is pretty cool.

The 12573190 are the AC Delco LS7 coils (round in shape). GM # 12570616 are the Mitsubishi version which are square and apparently hotter. The Mitsubishi truck coils (12558693) are also supposed to be robust as well, but use a different harness than the LSx coils (which is part #15301401).

As you can see, I did some research today :)
