how about Nissan 350/370z transmission?

My friend's 370z TT with stock transmission makes over 650whp and shifts like butter at 7500rpm. He does plenty of signal to signal action on street tires and went to the track once without issue. After several thousand miles, the stock transmission is still holding up while the clutch is not.

We all talk about T56, T6060, supra getrag, but we never seem to talk about the Nissan transmission unit. I drove my friend's Camaro and HATE the T56. If you're thinking of doing T56 swap, do yourself a huge favor and actually drive a car with a T56. You may change your mind. They are clunky and requires lot of effort for each shift IMHO. Anyhoo, Nissan transmissions are dirt cheap and seems to be a favorable candidate for our needs. How cheap? Check out on ebay. I'm talking $1000 or cheaper for the newer 370z units from 2010+ or about $500 or less for the older 350z units... There must be a reason why they are so cheap. I'm hoping nobody is buying them because they don't break lol

Before I do something stupid, I was wondering if anyone else have tried this... or if Nissan transmissions are even worth trying. Thank you.

Many of the nissan guys ( and toyota, for swaps when the getrag is prohibitibe ) go the nissan route as the transmissions are under 2K new from dealership .

I've been wondering about that too.

Although, the RX8 trans bolts up also. They can be had new for under $2k but I don't think it will handle big power.

stickmantijuana 02-09-15 08:04 PM

RX8 transmission shifts great but won't handle anything over 400whp, hell even 350whp.

Yes, the 350z tranny is good, as long as its the cd009 (not the cd008 from 2003 and halfway through 2004).

There are 350z drag cars with over 1k in whp. We just put one in a 240z with a 2jz making 600whp (way more torque than a rotary with similar hp). It's holding fine.

Strange thing I heard which may not be accurate. I heard it's the same box as the 6 speed rx8 transmission. Not sure if there is any truth to that.

Bmw m5/535d 6 speed from a 2005 ish or newer, will hold 1000hp in a 20b, bmw drivers rev 9k all day long and drives 8sec in 1/4 mile, 5th gear is the same ratio as our 4th and 6th is a 0.87 i think. Downside is weight....120lbs
Edit: GS6-53GZ.....speced as 560nm from factory but takes 2x that, costs 1000usd ish

stickmantijuana 02-10-15 02:18 PM

I looked into it. Older 350z transmission are good to 900-1000hp without any modifications... I may actually try it out. I can also get them for less than $500 locally.

wow! can't wait to see this, the 350z trans feels nice too, WAY nicer than the t56

i thought the Z used the same trans too, but it isn't on the list, so i have no idea what the Z has http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Aisin_transmissions

There are many variations of the t56. Not all of them are clunky. So whatever experience you have with one particular vehicle, wont apply to another. The m12 versions out of the CTS-V and Pontiac GTO are smooth with tripple cone syncros.

Hers a nice page to help you guys calculate the ratios for your particular setup.

well Nissan swap is going to be tougher than expected mostly because the starter is not mounted to the bellhousing... I would need to make a custom mount for the starter... just something to keep in mind for those considering this.

TwinCharged RX7 02-13-15 02:18 PM

can't you just make the adapter plate for the bell housing to the tranny box? That's how they do the T56 swaps anyway.

stickmantijuana 02-13-15 03:10 PM

correct me if I'm wrong, but looking at the 350z transmission photos, I don't think the bellhousing would come off. It seems to be one piece from the transmission case.

anderdick88 02-17-15 04:23 AM

Any news on which tranny is best to use

stickmantijuana 02-17-15 07:57 AM

From my own research, I think the best value is T56 magnum if you don't mind how it feels. If you want the best and don't mind spending $5k+ for the whole conversion, I would use getrag v160 from supra tt. If you want to take a risk and get creative, there seem to be plethora of BMW transmission that can take 700ftlb abuse from 4000lb cars. I would love to see someone use bmw transmission, but you will be the first one to take on such project.

350z zf transmissions are too difficult to use with our engines. Their bellhousing doesn't disassemble and their starter is not mounted to the bellhousing.
