20B Cosmo high end miss...

Hey all,

Virgin poster, I've done a search and couldn't find anything, so please don't maul me if I've missed anything!

I just took delivery of my 20B Cosmo ECCS on the weekend, and during the drive back interstate, we were testing it out a bit on the open road.

Basically if I put it in Slope mode (a lower gear basically used normally for descending hills) on the auto 'box and give it a bootful, it would get up towards 5k RPM or higher, and develop a bad miss. Actually, at any time when you really flatten it, it will develop a bit of a miss.

I'm still yet to perform a bit of basic maintenance (plugs and leads included), so I'm aware this issue could be related to them - but I thought I'd ask as I see at least one other member has had problems with high end missing on a 20B. Mine also seems to be running quite rich, so I intend to check the AFM too, being aware that if it's not functioning properly it could be running too rich, which could in turn foul the plugs, etc. There are times when the car REALLY wants to go, and damn does it have legs!

The car still has Mazda leads on it, which must mean they're at least 2 years old, as the car has been in Oz for that long, and they're probably a lot older than that, even.

What is a good replacement for the standard coils, assuming they're suspect? I understand I'm asking prematurely if I haven't done the obvious things like plugs and leads yet, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask this in advance!

Thanks in advance for your tips!

I starting having this same problem with my 20b and it
started after i had flooded it, I think if the plugs have been
flooded even once it will have this miss problem.
wouldn't you know it i flooded mine shortly after putting
in 6 new platinum plugs
I will live with it for now but i am sure new plugs would
solve my miss

Cheers for the tip, I'll hurry about getting some new plugs in it then, and some nice Magnacor leads... The stock Mazda items don't look like anything particularly special.

I also just noticed the other thread about 20B coils, and I will be having a look at the L3 contact tonight when I get home, out of interest.

Matt, I have actually been given your nickname as someone who has had some experience with the exhaust butterfly solenoids on your 20B? What can you tell me about the effects of not putting resistors in place when you remove the stock exhaust? My car is fitted with an aftermarket exhaust, and the owner didn't mention any changes made to trick the ECU without the butterfly system. It's a 1990 Cosmo, if that helps.

Cheers!

if you don't have resistors or the solenoids connected
you will be running really rich and if i remember right
as soon as boost comes on it will fall on its face.
I have been doing some testing and have found that
the stock computer is really tuned rich and there is lots
of room for things like open intake and open exhaust.
it might be a good idea to try a safc to try to lean up
the fuel as well, its nice to have lots of fuel to be safe
but to much fuel results in poor power output.
when i have more time i hope to finish building a ported
20b and run some upgraded turbos with the stock computer
and see what it does with that. my days of having extra
time are slowly running down, going to be a daddy soon,
but hope to have some away time from THEM and hide in the
garage

Pulled the leads off the coils yesterday and put them back on again, and I don't know if I'm imagining it or not, but the car feels better for it.

If it's not just me imagining it, then I look forward to seeing the result with good plugs and new leads!

Sounds like a typical rotary engine (two rotors included) problem with bad spark. 9 times out of 10, new spark plugs and spark plug wires solve the problem.
