Dyno'd my car.....

Well, still working on the car. Near complete!!

At the dyno today, we found out that the turbo is too small for the engine / exhaust flow.

We are reaching max efficiency at an average 13.6 psi of boost. The boost was jumping around, for the 1.32 AR housing is too small; along with my 46mm wastegate. It jumps between 10 psi and 14.5 psi, but the average is 13.6 when calculate all of the points.

The car reaches 14 psi by 2800 RPM, and it dyno'd at 628 RWHP with the average psi of 13.6.

If I were to slap a larger turbo on there, it would have no problem reaching WAY up. I chose the turbo, thinking it would be good, but was way too small. It is still great for the street/road racing, but there is a balance inbetween, and over the next year I will look into that further with the Acosta team.

Anyhow, still have to do a few more tuning stuff; but I will be driving it home tonight!

Well, it will be awhile. Car is on the lift, and dyno sheets in the car.

GOOD GRIEF MIKE!!! a 1.32 A/R is to small? I'm running the same a/r on my Garret T-76. PLEASE tell me you are bringing her to RR, I was only hoping for 600whp. I have the HKS 50mm adjustable wastegate with the 1.1 ~ 1.4 bar spring

felix_is_alive 04-13-04 10:28 PM

hhhmmmm , i have a feeling this thread is going to be very interesting.....

Jasil 04-14-04 12:26 AM

Where's the bullcrap meter when I need it. Sorry until I see a dyno sheet I don't think so.

Red-Rx7 04-14-04 10:45 AM

I just got home.

People forget the long drive from NJ to KC. It was a great drive too, it was a nice 1400 mile engine break in. I was very calm, never really going above 5k rpm with boost, but a few higher rpm's in low gears without boost for settlement.

It made it great, with one exception; it overheated in STL area. I was in tears. But, the rotary gods were happy with me. No damage, nothing major.

See, I ran out of time and not everything was completed. I still need to fix the Tach & coolant temps. The Greddy unit I have in the car had lost the sensor, and we tried to wire it to the Microtech sender. Well, the gauge uses different voltage to run properly.

It was due to a faulty wire connection on the fan & radiator. During the drive, the wires stopped touching; and no walla... no fan.

I only caught it before it got worse, because I was tired and was going to take a 30 minute power nap on the side of the road. When I looked at my Greddy water temp, it read lower than normal driving conditions. The car ran at 189f the whole way; which equates to 57c on the messed up voltage & greddy meter. When I noticed it, it was about 20c.

That caught me odd; for it was telling me the engine was cold. I popped the hood, and sizzle sizzzle sizzzzzle. Coolant burning from unknown areas, etc. :(

Fixed the wire, let it cool down, no damage. Everything purs like normal.

I will scan the dyno later today. I am tired, for I have been awake for more than 48 hours straight. I have popped more caffine pills and died mt. dew to last me 2 years.

Oh, Jasil, check your new title.

Yeah, it will be there.

I am out of cash, but need to buy a new wastegate and only hope this helps on the boost control. The 46mm doesn't nearly cut it. The 1.32 ar is restrictive with the ports on the engine.

I am going to look for the HKS, for that seems the next choice.

Originally, I had the double red springs in the TIAL wastegate; making it 1 bar. But, we took out the little one; leaving the 10.XX psi. We were hoping to use this + a manual boost controller to help with the boost. No luck thus far.

Red-Rx7 04-14-04 10:54 AM

Here are a few more things I need to look into:

1) blow off valve. I have an HKS racing one, and at idle, it is like an open hole in my intake pipe. Maybe this is causing weird boost?

2) Vacuum link somewhere since the drive home. You can hear it leaking with the hood open. Ziptie must have poped off.

You're the man....

felix_is_alive 04-14-04 11:14 AM

glad to see you got the car finally running man...good luck

Red-Rx7 04-14-04 11:56 AM

http://home.comcast.net/~mhaun5/rx7/13psiDyno.jpg

Actually, we pulled off of the dyno at 6175 rpm. So, I am sure the 7k rpm dyno number would be 10 or 15 hp higher.

We ended the run early due to the fuel injectors lifting out of the LIM.

The reason you also see the first line & dip was because Marcos started recording the dyno in 3rd gear, before SR. shifted into 4th for the run. This was done because they were missing part of the run due to the very fast rpm spool.

Red-Rx7 04-14-04 12:06 PM

Also, here is the breakout by RPM/RWHP:

3,769 RPM = 195 RWHP
4,092 RPM = 300 RWHP
4,307 RPM = 400 RWHP
4,576 RPM = 500 RWHP
4,845 RPM = 560 RWHP
5,437 RPM = 600 RWHP
6,175 RPM = 628.8 RWHP

Red-Rx7 04-14-04 12:06 PM

As you can see, the 4k RPM band is crazy. Mostly though, the tires just spin.

Gargamel 04-14-04 12:14 PM

Have you punched it on the street?

Are you going to get some tires?

Whenever you're ready :)

Right before I came home, there was a red early 90's fox body mustang with a supercharger who I ran.

I have a shitty "make do" bad 5th geared transmission in the car until my guru box arrives this week.

Anyhow, I took him off the "go", and then grinded and missed every gear. Took my time, threw it into 3rd. He was about 2 cars ahead of me. I then flew by him. He was surprised, asking what it would run in the 1/4.

I managed to hook rather well on that get go. Then, my butterflies got stuck open at 4k rpm. I had to shut the car off rolling, and free them. Oh the joys.

MIKE GO AFTER THOSE COBRA NOW. TEACH THEM WHAT A ROTARY CAN DO

Gargamel 04-14-04 01:39 PM

Cobras are slow anyways..... you'll have to go from a 90 punch so you don't kill yourself.

men that shit is funny :D ...... its good to be a mod:cool:
i ordered a Garrett GT42R 1.22 A/R thinking it will be OK for my streetported 20b....my first choice was a 1.32 a/r but i felt that would be a over kill for the streets...i dont think i can get the Gt42 with a larger turbine housing than a 1.32:(

Thats what I am thinking of getting but in the 1.32 a/r. Is your porting job big or small? I'm very interested in how this turbo works out for you. How long till it fires up? Please keep us posted.

Red RX-7, those are very impresive numbers, congrats. What turbo is that? What size injectors? C'mon now share a little...
