20b conversion

I'm planning on transplanting a 20b into my 1985 RX and was wondering if any one can give me a heads up on what to expect so I don't reinvent the wheel, so to speak.

What kind of trany should I use, adapter plates available, iginition, if needed, rear end etc....

I will be installing a roll to strengthen the body and also want to install a Rotrex Blower instead of the twin turbo setup.

Any takers?

How many parts do you have to finish the swap?

85rotarypower Oct 30, 2007 05:38 PM

Ok, first off it sounds like your treating this as a regular TII swap. A 20b swap is a much different beast. But I guess I can answer a few questions for you. You WILL need to use a TII tranny, it will bolt to a 20b engine. You WILL need a different rear end to handle the power, besides the granny's Ford 8.8, its all custom. Mounting of the engine is all engine is all custom, no kits for this swap. Fuel system will have to be addressed. Ignition is going to depend on whether you want to keep the stock computer or go carbed or full standalone. Also, you might want to consider keeping the stock turbos to keep costs down as even a basic 20b swap can exceed 10K easily, unless of course cost is no object.

Ditto.

Take a deep breath.....big gulp.....and open the pocketbook, cause this aint no ordinary junkyard engine swap.

Look at the 20B sub-forum, under Rotary Performance. Most of the contributors are people who have been there and done that.

Just to give you a yardstick: Mariah Motorsports wanted $36,000 to do a 20B conversion. Pettit wanted $35,000. Those are prices from about nine years ago, so they probably haven't gone down.

Your best bet is to buy my car. I'm asking $29,500. It's a turnkey operation, and you can keep your current car stock. See:

we are currently doing a full 20b conversion into first gen now. if you want one done, we can supply engine (full race built block, want 700-800+hp road car?), make all mounts, fuel system etc etc for $40K NZ (approx $30K US) bolt in your car and go

more on 20b conversion???

If you drop a 20b into the third gen body (93-95) bring the horses up to a paltry 450-550, can the stock drive train handle it? Would it be a better and cheaper investment to go that route?

felix_is_alive Nov 22, 2007 12:48 PM

there are 13b`s making that power in the 3rd gen , with stock drivetrain ...so i dont see the problem with the 20B doing the same ....of course it has been said that that is the level that shit will start breaking , so it depends on what your`e going to do with it
Ex: if you push 550 to the wheels and put some slicks on it , and dump the clutch @8K RPM on the track .....you know what will happen
But that kind of power on the streets SHOULD last (at least a decent amount)

i cant believe the prices people want for these conversions.....and then people have the nerve to say that im greedy for asking for 7k for my entire setup...although i was just selling the engine and everything needed to make it run i think that 7k was a steal...the whole package was up and running it was just going to be taken out of the car it was in but people just didnt want to spend that type of money just for an engine i guess.
