What do you guys think of this as a tire choice?

Running a stock 1985 RX-7 GS, and when I say stock, I mean original tires.

I'm gonna go to the local Discount Tires and get em mounted/balanced there.

My dad just got Z-Rated tires for his BMW M3... now, I'd like a set of those for my rx... a little idealistic, though. Lemme know what you guys think of the T4s.

Just got rid of near new Yokohama 306's that were fantastic in the dry and quiet, but scary as hell in the wet. Hope your T4's are much better. I put Michelins on a couple of weeks ago but have had no rain to see if they're any better. Hot as hell and bush fires everywhere here at the moment.

I have been using Dunlop W10s on my 85 and find them better than the Yokohama 539s and the old 509s. Handling is superb both dry and wet. Even liked them in light snow conditions

Even hotter in the ACt, we lost over 500 houses to fire last weekend and the forecast is for 40C and high winds. Fortunately no rotaries were lost!

i am currently running Yokohama A509's Nice and sticky, great grip in the dry, and they dont let go quickly, they will slowly start to slide as they loose traction in corners, and they arnt too bad in the wet either, but they are SOFT and wear pretty quickly.

The touble is the 509s are out of production and have been replaced by the 539 in a more restricted tire range.

The problem is more modern cars have larger wheels and there is a reduced demand for performance tires in the old classic 13" and 14" wheel sizes. Its getting to the stage where it may be necessary to buy a set for future use.

how fuked is it!? 37 today and i couldnt even see the sun, couldnt even see 100m infront of me for that matter from all the smoke!

i got sumitomo's on mine, i duno if they make the size for what ever rims u got, but on the little stock 13" these tired are prety cheep, but there soft compound so they really do hold the road..

I've got the stock 13" steel rims. The Avid T4s were in a test against two other types of tires in their class (The T4s being the cheapest), and they came out on top. I'm hoping they're a little more durable than the 500-series tires. ;)

Just my opinion, but 185/70's look too skinny on an RX-7, and they impede performance. Is there a reason you'd like to stay with that tire size? On my first RX-7 (1984 GSL), I replaced the 185/70's with 215/60's (on stock wheels), and that thing cornered really well after that! Have you considered a wider tire?.. perhaps not as wide as a 215, but something wider than stock?

I agree, they are kinda skinny looking. As far as performance goes... I don't know how tires effect that.

I don't know what all fits on the stock rims, and I don't know how much difference in ride-height I'd get with 185/60s and such. Has anyone got some pictures of tires? People usually ask to see wheels, but I'm content with the stock rims... it's the 18 year old tires I wanna ditch!

The T4's come in all sorts of sizes, so I could get another size, I just dont know what fits/works well/looks good.

To answer the "what fits" question... what size are your wheels? The rule of thumb for 5.5" wheels is a maximum tire width of 3" wider, which would be 215's. I had 5.5" wheels on my GSL, and I wanted to go with wider tires, so I went with 215/60's to have the same rolling circumference as 185/70's.
