Yes Sunroof or No Sunroof

Howdy

I got a glass sunroof laying in my garage, I am thinking about putting it in, but I can not make a decision. Will our forum members help me to decide?

Any advise and opinions will be appreciated.

Dude first gens with sunroofs look way cooler than first gens that are lacking. Put that sucker in.

ChasRX 06-04-04 08:38 PM

Don't cut a hole in your roof if you don't have one already!

kiker14 06-04-04 08:42 PM

send ME the glass sunroof... :D

kiker14 06-04-04 08:43 PM

(in all honesty, I might really be interested in it if u can give it up for a good price...)

aGoGo 06-04-04 08:43 PM

My Rex is a 85GS, the very basic car, no addition options = no holes in the roof yet.

I do drive it hard every now and then and planning on learn how to "drive" with it. Also I use it as a little cruiser and hope a glass sunroof would be nice.

Please feel free to brainstorm on this one, I'd like to hear all opinions. Thanks all!

The sunroof is an aftermarket one I picked up from a rx7 shop. It is pretty good size, as wide but a little shorter than the stock glass roofs

FirstGen7 06-04-04 08:45 PM

Personally I'd be a little nervous about cutting a big gaping hole in my baby's roof...but if you know what you're doing, go for it man.

Sunroofs = pimpage.

I agree 100% with that statement

Can someone also teach me how to use a Sawsall??

cosmicbang 06-04-04 09:55 PM

It's your roof if you want to cut a hole in it go ahead. Something to think about: Cars without sunroofs can be hard to find. Some of us actually used to weld in sheetmetal to get rid of the sunroof.

"Some of us actually used to weld in sheetmetal to get rid of the sunroof"

Why is that?

aGoGo 06-04-04 10:15 PM

BTW

"Can someone also teach me how to use a Sawsall??"

I was kidding

I can honestly say I haven't heard of an aftermarket sunroof install that doesn't leak and rust...

That's not saying there isn't...

At the u-pull-it yard, I saw an FB with a custom sunroof. It was real little and It was ugly as crap and everything inside was wet.

aGoGo 06-05-04 12:00 AM

Ok, I might consider selling it

RotaryRyan 06-05-04 12:47 AM

I know alotta people want those glass sunroofs.

How much will you sell it for?

V8kilr 06-05-04 12:47 AM

DONT PUT IT IN.

IF there is no hole there then just call up a sunroof shop and tell them you want a wabasto pop-up , or electric pop-up.
tell them you want cash and carry on it.

It will be complete with instructions, glass and the electric one pops up like a pop0up when you press button forward, then if you hit button backward it slides back like a moonroof.

Why play with a crank if you can have electric????

BTW the standard pop-up is cheap if you get cash and carry on it.

jorx81@aol.com 06-05-04 05:40 PM

If you are going to do it, cut the stock roof assembly from a sunroof car and weld into your roof, I'm working on one right now, i have a parts car someone did it to and you can't even tell.
You could theoretically do it w/o welding, but mine is cut and welded flush.

Make sure to mock up the sunroof headliner to make sure it's straight before you weld.

kleinke 06-05-04 07:50 PM

The sunroof adds extra weight. If you want a light weight car do not do it. There is more headroom without sunroof, and the car is more rigid. I looked a long time to find one without a sunroof. They are hard to find that way and maybe worth more.

I *want* a non sunroof car.

Sunroofs are nice for driving around with the top off... but there is something to be said for HELMET ROOM.

If I ever get the GXL back on the road, before it gets repainted, the sunroof skin will be welded into the hole and all of the mechanism removed. Only thing that takes up more room than a pop-up sunroof, is a sliding sunroof.

RotaryRevn 06-06-04 07:12 PM

I got about 5 of these roofs. Gonna sell them but gotta figure out how to package them first :)
