Yaw Carb Questions
 

Hey guys! anyone out there have any input on the Yaw Power carb mods? In particular the "super street" has anyone had this mod done? My engine is a non-ported 79' 12a but I have an 83' carb that I have been thinking about sending to Mr. Yaw. What kind of power increase can I expect and driveability/reliability? MPG I couldnt care less about as I get about 12 mpg with my wore-out 79' carby right now. Thanks guys, Jason

Isn't the whole operation Paul Yaw, couple of his friends, some hardcore rotary and mechanical knowledge, lots of free time, and a machine shop?

What do you expect when the only tangible things there are a couple dudes and some tools?

Wonder what his demand is like?

Yeah but wouldn't that be a SWEET business? Make cool stuff all day in the name of R&D. The sucky part would be the actual WORK required (you know, doing stuff that pays the bills like selling finished product).

I think somewhere on his site he said he has over 200 of his carbs in circulation... 'course given the amount of work he does to them and the intake manifolds, I could see spending a solid couple of days per carb!

well if you have a header and a decent fuel pump you will get a good amount of power all over your rpm band. only problem i had was cold mornings trying to start it up have to hold gas down but other than that its a pretty nice carb setup

I heard that Yaw got 141 hp out of a 12a with only his modded carb, the stock manifold, and 2 1/4 exhaust.

I think the thing is he mostly does work for racers and such... he doesnt really have the time or the resources to keep up with the demands of the general RX-7 public. If it is just him and his buddies, I can see where he's coming from... I'm in the process of rebuilding three carbs for customers at the moment and I'm swamped :(.

I put my Yaw on this fall, He had the carb about six to eight weeks. It came back looking like a piece of artwork. It is beautiful. So far I have not had enough time to finish tuning the carb and car completely. But let me share this with you, my first impression of the carb is that I better buy NEW BRAKES! The car is much, much faster, and the powerband is solid from start to finish, no more transition from the secondaries coming on line.
Paul is a professional who is very busy. His shop consists of him and one other worker. He proves all of his claims with dyno results, not just off the cuff BS. He is very honest and very helpful. He also can be very hard to get ahold of, and at times seems like he does not respond well. Such are the consequences of being so very busy. Actually, the real problem is that he doesn't charge enough for his work. If he did he could probably afford more staff. Personally, I will deal with the wait.
There are no better performing mods for the money, available for our cars anywhere.

I completely agree with hanman. I've got my Yaw carb dialed in right, and it kicks ass!
Paul Yaw will spend time with you on the phone (when he answers it) talking about the most basic things you might ask, never with a sigh , or seeming like you're wasting his time. He's a great guy, and I've learned an awful lot from him via Email. It takes a while for him to answer, and for your carb to get back to you, but he's not happy till you're happy.

Also, jsinrx7, if you're getting only 12 MPG, then your carb is so out of tune right now, that when you put Yaws carb on...well, if you like your car now, just wait!!;)

Yaw carbs are truely a piece of art. i have ignition problems with my car so i don't have the carb dialed in yet, but i'm still very impressed with the results. it still starts fairly easy after sitting in 20 degree weather for 2 weeks.

i keep hearing that, but i got mine back in 4 weeks. that is including shipping it almost 2000 miles each way. i guess it depends on his workload.
what struck me is he reuses the packaging mat'l to send it back to ya. his return shipping fee was within a $1 of what was printed on the box. that may sound pointless, but to me it really proves the point that he's not doing this for the money.

it's a pia to get ahold of him, but when he finally got around to calling me back he spent alot of time with me on the phone. not only about the carb, but his suggestions for exhaust, how to port the manifold, etc. hellava guy

If you mean the Pro7 setup... those cars are required to run stock carburetors with no modifications other than jetting, stock intake manifolds with the shutter valve shaft in place, stock exhaust manifolds, stock ports, etc. And it wasn't 141hp, it was 151hp! Take a look...

One of the reasons that it takes so long to get your carb back, is because he does them five at a time. So if your carb is number one in line, then you have to wait for four other guys. Just makes sense.
Also, another reason it is so difficult to get a hold of Paul, he spends so much time with people on the phone giving them free advice that you again have to wait in line.
I think Paul is a terrific asset to our rotary community. I don't judge him by the same set of criteria that I judge "other" rotary vendors, because he isn't like the others.
