Worn LSD
 

Last nite i had my GSL-SE up on a lift.. I would spin the wheel slowly and the other would spin in the same direction also, But when i would spin it fast from a dead stop the other with spin slightly and then stop while the one i spun would continue to spin. Is this a sign of a worn LSD?

I have a much more clear sign that mine is worn, when I go around corners and floor it the inside back tire spins really fast in my SE. Does yours do that? Does anyone know if the lsd clutches inside can just be replaced? Thanks.

I believe the 84-85 lsd clutches can be replaced. I would get a Mazda Factory Service manual.

rx7nut: My GSL-SE does the exact same thing. PLus it has a vibration at 110km/h (60m/h).

Jimmy54: I think your LSD is getting worn out. I think mine is further along (more worn) then yours.

I even took my driveshaft out on the weekend, to make sure the u-joints weren't causing the vibration or anything rear end related, and the u-joints were perfect, so I'm suspecting the LSD.

Jimmy54: Did you put synthetic in you rear end? (No anal jokes please!) :) ) I have synthetic in there and as a temp solution until I can have the LSD rebuilt or get a new unit, I was going to put some heavy rear end oil in there to see if it'll help the clutchs engage.

yeah mines worn out too fucking clutches, mazda should've used a torsen unit, and don't you bastards try and tell me it wasn't around then, because mazda had the rotary engine since 1865 and they sat on it just like they've done with the new rotary design, torsen unit and a bunch of other shit i am not at loberty to talk about.
Yes the clutches can be replaced.

Did you use LSD additive with your gear lube? I changed the fluid once and forgot to put it in and it felt like it would clunk around some when going from acceration to deceration. I realized I hadn't put the additive in, so I did. It did reduce it, so I know its needed.

Torsen - shmorsen...

Get a nice shop to replace your clutches (if you have a disc brake rear-end)...

If you want a Torsen you'll have to swap your axle for a GSL-SE rear-end and then you'll have the wrong bolt pattern on the rear of the car and you'll need 2 new wheels, so you may as well change to the GSL-SE front spindles and be done with it...

I changed my fluid with Redline (LSD additive already in it). I'm not getting chatter in the rear end. Might be my crappy tires. But I'm going to get my LSD clutches replaced.

Anyone have an idea on price it'll cost to get the clutches replaced?

Yeah I put synthetic in to and it didn't do much. Which may also be good if it stopped it from getting worse. Does anyone have a rough idea of how much it would cost just to replace the clutches? Thanks.

Naw, its easier than that. '82-85 GSL axles will work, and leave you with the same bolt pattern. All 84-85 rear axles, including the drum brake ones, use the bigger bearings and shafts. The Miata torsen will fit in any of them.

So really, how hard would it be to take the Miata torsen unit out of it's diffy and put it in mine? 1985 GSL...

It replaces the clutch pack right...

Yeah.. Frankenaxle is in the making.. I wanna know if everything'll fit though... Axles are expensive.. I can't go buy two axles for cars that I don't own if I can't use parts from em.

Another way is to use a torsen unit from Guru Motorsports in Australia, you will not have to replace your axels at all!!

I run one in mine and I just won the Benella Gold Trophy (I know it means nothing to most people outside of Victoria, Australia) but it means something over here :)

I run a Torsen, a flywheel and a close ratio transmission from them, and SH__ they are good. Built for Gen 1 - 3, but I race a Gen 1.

Have a look at the Guru Site, A unit costs $795 plus shipping, I know a guy in Texas who runs one, his cost I think $30 to send.
