World's Easiest Tire/Rim Question
Please excuse this moronic question. I searched around, but was unable to find where this had been asked before.
My 83 GS had brand new tires when I bought it. I can't remember the size off of the top of my head right now. But these are the wheels it has. I think they are 13x5 and I hate them. http://car-part.com/images/interchange/thumbW64674.jpg I found a set of the 13x5.5 alloys local to me and I want to know if I can switch my other tires right over? Will the tires be compatible between the two sets of rims, or does the extra 1/2" require a different set of tires to be purchased? http://car-part.com/images/interchange/thumbW64635.jpg If someone can confirm whether or not this switch is possible I would appreciate it. I want to pick up the alloy wheels for my project car, but I don't want to buy new tires for them. If necessary I can provide the size of the tires that are on the hideous steelies. Thanks fellas! :D Jamie |
Hi Jamie...this is Jaime.
Yup...shouldn't be a problem. Tires cross sections can fit a range of widths...especially since you're close to the original size. As long a the diameter is the same. Damn...those old GS wheels are sorta trick! Since they're steel, you can widen those..make some 13x7 or 8's! |
Jaime,
Thanks! -Jamie :D |
it would actually benefit you- to stretch just a bit = stiffer side walls which is always more fun...so yea by all means. give it a go!

Definitely can. I had the steelies on my S and got the alloys and just had a shop switch tires over no problem. If your steelies are in good shape, I'd keep them around, just for nastalgic value, since everyone seems to hate them. I still have the original hub caps
