Won't run on its own.
Hello guys,
I'm having an issue with my carb and I can't find answers because I'm having a hard time describing the issue. First of all, this is my first time dealing with a carb engine so knowledge is limited. Anyway, It will run all day on ether if I keep spraying it. Idles perfect, etc. But the second I turn the fuel pump on itll kill it. Currently my fuel pump is on a toggle switch and the fuel lines are going into a gas can. It is getting fuel. It is a stock carb. |
The first thing I'd want to check is the fuel level in the float chamber when the fuel pump is active. The OEM carb is sensitive to excess pressure. If you have not done so, download the Factory Service Manual and the more detailed carb manual. See my signature for the link.

TO be clear, there are TWO float chambers, fore and aft, each with a Sight Glass so you can see if there is fuel in the bowl. Front one fairly easy to view, but rear needs a mirror to see it under the hardware...

(For some reason the pedal isn't working. Everything looks like its moving but I have to move it by hand to actually get it to rev. So will need to look into this a bit more) But now itll run and start up with ease. But will only run for a few seconds. If I give it gas, It'll keep it from dying at least for a little while. So going to hunt for some vacuum leaks tomorrow. First time ever playing around with a Carb engine, So it's been a learning curve. |
welcome to the board. :)
do you have reference materials (FSM and/or Haynes)? if not, get them. they will make your life better. it won't hurt to double check for vacuum leaks, like you said, but it sounds more likely (because you mentioned earlier that it idled fine when you were hand-feeding it ether) that your idle mixture is way off. that's the next place i would look. |
Have you checked the accelerator cable connection to the carb.? It sounds as if you have a problem there. You definitely need the cable connected correctly so that you get the benefit of the accelerator pump. BTW, did you find debris in the screens atop the carb. fuel inlets?
