Wiring mystery solved!!

Hi everyone!
So today,i can finally give good news!

For the last week,i have been having a completely dead ignition system.

I hope this will help someone, when faced with the same problem.
Here is how i fixed it:

1.Remove the covers surround the steering wheel column. There will be 2 screws,on of either side of it,securing it to the column.

2.With the covers removed, you should be able to see the back of the igniton switch. There should be about 5 wires connected to it.

3.Look for a wire with this color : Black ,with a red stripe.(I`am not 100% sure it will be the same colour on all the years, but it`s relevant for the `82 GSL)

4.Follow the wire, till just before the firewall.

5.Here you will find a Fuseable link,it supplies a feed from the ignition switch,to both the coils,as well as to both ignitors.

This little Fusbeale link was the reason my ignition system was dead.

I have not found any Factory manuals that point it out in the wiring diagrams.

I was so happy to find it,made my week.

I`am glad to hear that!

To give a little more info:The fusebale link is about 1.5" long, with a male connector on each side.I forgot to put that in my original post.
*edit*Sheeeshhh my spelling sucks today!

Glad you found the problem!

The relay I installed last week croaked while I was driving yesterday. I'd have to wait a few minutes and then it would work for about 5 minutes, then click off by itself again. It was difficult, but I made it home. I swapped in a relay from my GLC project and so far, so good.

thats actually how I troubleshoot most of the ignition system. disconnect the stock + ignition wires in the coil, and connect wires directly from the battery.

its a learning experience and im sure you will not forget it.

In case someone searches for a red wire with black stripe.....

On my '82 GSL and the FSM the ignition feed power is WHITE with a RED stripe. The Black with Red stripe is the starter solenoid power lead. It turns into a black/yellow stripe wire at the fusible link.
