Window channel question

ok here it goes... My window always comes off the channel... very annoying i have a 84 GS i wanted to see if this was a common problem

Manntis 01-12-03 07:24 PM

Mine WAS like that 'till I replaced the rubber channels

mwpayne 01-12-03 07:32 PM

Mine was too. Best to replace, but I got by by drilling the hole bigger for the front-most channel screw. That way you can adjust it back or forward to get it as snug as possible without binding. Then, spray some white silicone grease in the channel.
Worked great for me.:)

i'll have to try drilling a bigger hole sounds like it'll work to me

Is there any other place that sells those glass run channels cheaper than $60 a piece?

Thanks. If I had a cross-section of that rubber, I might be able to find a replacement part from JC Whitney, since they sell weatherstrip by the foot.

i thought i was the only one that came up with re drilling the whole to make it fit better.

u guys think i'll still need to get new channels if i drill the holes???? hopefuly not cause i'm poor!

Wankelguy 01-13-03 11:40 AM

Are you sure you have the regulator positioned correctly? There are two 10mm bolts toward the rear edge of the door that adjust the way the regulator lifts the window, if they are not adjusted properly, that can also cause the problem you are having.

drippa 01-13-03 11:47 AM

uh yea i moved the regulator bolts but i don't think it helped.... do you know the correct positions for them? (eg. right in up position and left in down position)

mwpayne 01-13-03 01:01 PM

I pulled the entire shebang out & lubed it up with grease, the sprayed with WD-40. Reassembled and drilled the hole towards the front of the car bigger (by bigger I mean oblong, bigger left to right). Sprayed white grease I got from auto supply store in the channels, ran the windows up & down while playing with the new adjusting hole. Found a spot where it went up & down & stayed on track, tightend 'er up.
No more problems.

NOTE TO jr69187-It may have been your post I learned the hole trick from. It was certainly on this forum!

Manntis 01-13-03 02:46 PM

FWIW I paid $35 for BOTH rubber channels (that's about $20 USD) directly from the Mazda dealership

The positions depend on the car. Trial and error. Another thing occurred to me: are the little plastic gizzys (technical term...) that go through the bottom of the glass intact? Those are prone to breakage. I replaced the driver's side regulator a couple of months ago, the channel rubbers are all but gone, but my window still rolls up and down without de-trackifying itself. Good luck! -WG

I'd say that's worth something....about $100 USD! Thanks for the bit of info! :)

drippa 01-13-03 08:37 PM

yea i'm pretty sure the little plastic thingers are still intact but i'll check that too.

I went from hey i know whats wrong with this thing to...... good god it could be this this this this or this. oh well as long as i fix it eventualy

Just called the dealer....they want $46 a piece. Doh! How did you get such a good deal on those?

Wankelguy 01-14-03 11:23 AM

Maybe the Canadian dealerships are cheaper?
I'd see if Manntis might help you out if he can get them that cheap. Hell, I'd go for a set myself at that price!

Sounds like Manntis may have an opportunity for more parts on his website!:bigthumb:

85RX7GS 01-14-03 04:00 PM

True, but with his markup and international shipping rates, it's going to be more than what he paid. Still, if he'd sell them for both for less than the price of one, I'd consider buying them.
