widest tires GSL-SE stock 14R
 

hey gang I had the GSL-SE wheels redone and the look great - Im wondering if there are and wider tires available for the stock rims? Any suggestions?

Not really a point in running wider than a 205 on a stock wheel.

The 205/60/VR 14 tires that came on the SE fit more comfortably on a 14" x 6"-6".5 wheel than they do on 14"x 5.5" wheel that came on these cars so there's no point trying to put a wider tire on that wheel. A lot of years ago i had an SE that i put 215/60/R14 tires on. The tires were smoother than what i took off but the car didn't handle any better,it actually handled worse with a real on center dead spot in the steering. If those tires had been put on the wider wheel referenced above,it would have handled better but would still have some of the dead on center feel. There are not many good tires made in 14 size anymore,you'll have to settle for an all season which is no where near the Pirelli tires that came on the car new. I found some Nexen directional all season tires in 205/60/HR14 that fit my original wheels well and the car rides and handles pretty good with them.
For any kind of performance tire you need to go up to at least a 15" wheel which is what i did,keeping the new tires/original wheels for cruising and winter storage.I take 15" wheels and summer tires off and store indoors as they don't fare well in cold temperatures.

If you don't mind me asking,where did you have the wheels restored,and $$$.

Whereabouts in Delaware are you located? I'm about 20 minutes past state line in Md.

Also interested in where the wheels were restored. My clear costs peeling and I don't care for it

thanks for the replies guys as for the wheel refinishing - I used a local place in Wilmington DE not all that far from me called www.sportscartire.com I paid about 150 per wheel and they came out great - they recut the machined portion (the spokes), repainted inbetwen the spokes (as factory) and polished the outer lip then cleared everything

for those not close to DE there is a national place that does this but I have never used them - wheelsamerica.com

Several years ago I was unable to find any 205 tires in 14", so I wound up with 195. I hear that 215 can rub the springs but it's a moot point if you can't even find them in the first place

it doesn't help your case much, but if you decide to move away from the OE wheels, I am running 85-ish Toyota Supra rims on my GSL-SE equipped SA. 14x7" in size, fitted with 225/50R14 Toyo Proxes R888 tires. I run them on the street and use them in autocross and on the track. Great setup and looks good. They poke out past the fender lips just slightly. The rears only seem to rub on the driver side and only at low speed when one wheel dips into a deep pothole, like a poorly maintained gravel driveway. the fronts just barely rub the inner fenders at full lock. None of it bothers me at all, especially considering the amazing cornering performance that comes from it. I don't spend much time at full lock or driving through potholes.

These Vredesteins are only about .3" taller than stock size and with a 300 treadwear will be better than a lot of the 215 tires you guys are considering. I found them looking to see if the Sprint Classic was available in your size like it is for the 13" wheels (it isn't). The Sprint Classic, despite TireRack's rating is actually a vintage race tire. The Sportrac below looks a little more tame.
