Why Does Static Increase as My RPMs Increase When Listening To AM?
 

Ok. So i have a Sony CDX M630 CD Player and when Im listening to the AM stations there is very little static at idle. Then as I rev my car up under normal driving (stop light to stop light) The higher the RPMs the more static there is in the station. On some stations it gets to the point where you cant even hear anything but static. Then as my RPMs go down the static will slowly go away until completly gone at idle. Ive got to hear Michael Savage's The Savage Nation! and it gets a lot of static t 3-6k RPMs....help? help?

I've never had a problem like that before. I've had the altenator whine before but all I did was make sure that I had good ground and I ran my speaker wires far away from any power lines. Since then whenever I install a new stereo I run all new lines( power/ground,speaker, and in the case with my seven antennae because I got a new one).

I had a similar static problem with my radio and new spark plugs wires cured it.

Like inittab said- new wires should do the trick. Back 10 or so years ago if you had performance type wires you had to make sure they were specifically branded as 'shielded wires'.
I think radio shack may still carry a noise supression filter or something for a.m. too...

yes, buy a noise supresser filter on the positive wire for the stereo.

haha i just discovered this today... on AM 990. i thought it was nifty - kind of sounded like a turbo.






of course, i am easily amused.

You know what's really neat....

Get some non-resistor spark plugs (those damned pricey NGK's that Paul Yaw was going on about years ago) and some el-cheapo Bosch plug wires with big chunks of insulation missing.

Add MSD 6AL ignition system with attendant twin Blaster coils for the leading.

Find the AM station with the best "reception".

Turn volume ALL THE WAY UP.

Drive down the street, pretending you're driving a video game.

What I always loved about AM is at night when your cruisin down the road, hit the scan button..It'll find a 'strong AM station'... listen to it for a while and you'll find out it's from like 2000 miles away..
Cheap way to stay up on current events in some other god-forsaken place!

Ive had problems where i hear the fuel pump through my stereo, its caused by bad grounds. check that is sprak plug wires dont fix

Hell, just install a massive sub w in the hatch & you will never notice the interference from your lame spark plugs.

Well Guys, im just going to buy some new pugs and wires. I need them anyway, besides the owner before me didnt go with NGK so im gonna rip out these Kragen Cheapies and replace everything.

You can call them rotary speakers.

I personally have had nothing but Bad Luck[tm] with NGK plug wires. They work okay until they get a little damp, and then it's misfire city. (NEW wires!)

magnecor 8mm are good. i noticed static using the 10mm on FC's.

Something else to consider is the length of the ground wire from your stereo head unit to the car ground. The shorter the better. On my system, cutting the ground to the shortest wire possible and grouding to the frame as close to the head unit as possible, and adding the above mentioned radio shack noise filter eliminated the AM ignition noise..

I was behind a semi truck at a stop light in a Ford Econoline. Everytime his blinker flashed you would hear a static noise from the speakers on AM.

yeah a rockford 12" aimed at the back hatch window works awesome. sounds like u have 2 subs when u dont. And best part. no rattle outside the car and its almost sound proof. You'll cover up any weird engine sounds with that. Damn i love rx7s for they're soundproofness and the most amazing engine ever made.
