Who's running a carter fuel pump?

I know theres a few on here running carters, is it just me or is it really loud? Granted I don't have the storage bins back in the car yet, but it almost drowns out the engine. Is it just me? On the up side the pump seems to work good, what kind of pressure are you guys running for a basically stock carb?

REVHED 12-19-05 10:07 PM

How did you mount it?

82transam 12-19-05 10:11 PM

the bracket it mounted right to the bottom of the car, but I used the rubber mounts between that bracket and the pump itself. I seem to recall seeing optional rubber mounts for the bracket as wel mentioned in the instructions, maybe i'll look into getting those. Oh and I mounted it right above the brake line junction that goes from the long hardline to the hose for the rear end. Maybe the fact that its bolted to sheet metal rather than a frame rail has something to do with it. hmm....

I have a carter fuel pump, the way I mounted it was to the back of the bin by bending the bracket that it came with... It is pretty noisy, but thats what music is for haha or you can always cut appart a rubber boot or something and make a damper of some sort.

82transam 12-19-05 10:17 PM

ok so you mounted it in the same spot I did then, yea, I bent teh bracket too so the pump sits pretty level, I made up new hard lines and everything, the install looks nice and clean, I just wasn't expecting it to be so noisy, maybe once the bins are back in it'll quiet down...

I had one mounted sideways. I don't remember it being too loud.. The puralator one I had was louder, as I remember it.

REVHED 12-19-05 11:51 PM

You should've mounted it to the frame rail. There's a perfect spot for it and it's a lot quieter.

jayroc 12-20-05 12:02 AM

Well, I know that NOW.. heheh

jasrx 12-20-05 12:36 AM

my carter is mounted above the diff , and its no louder then my bosch 984 efi pump

Mazdax605 12-20-05 05:54 AM

I have a Carter mounted much the same way as you have explained it,and yes it is loud.

82transam 12-20-05 08:25 AM

The only spot I see on a frame rail that has enough room and is low enough to the bottom of the tank to work is the part where it curves upward, like right where the fuel shutoff safty valve goes normally. I was gonna put it there but it just didn't seem to fit right, I'll have to look into that spot again I guess, I'm not sure I wanna put up with all that noise, hehe.

Mine's mounted near the frame rail, almost where the brake hose is. It's not too loud, the exhaust drowns most of it out.

hanman 12-20-05 10:02 AM

There is really no way around it, the Carter's are loud. They are a good value, i.e. inexpensive but perform well. But, they are loud. You can hear mine outside the car.

I run 2.5lbs of pressure as per Paul Yaw's instructions.

82transam 12-20-05 10:03 AM

maybe the fact that I have no sound deadening tar is why its so loud then. hmm.. Whatever, as long as it works I guess.

82transam 12-20-05 10:10 AM

alright 2.5 or so is about what I set mine to after messing around with the adjustment for a little while last night. and you can hear mine clearly outside the car from some distance back. oh well

hanman 12-20-05 10:12 AM

I think that installing rubber between the car and the pump would help, but it's not going to change the fact that they are just plain loud. The good news is that you will always know when your pump isn't working.

OtakuRX 12-20-05 11:19 AM

I have one and it is noisey too, but I like it and the questions ppl ask about this "buzzing" sound that they here as we drive around.

Glazedham42 12-20-05 11:35 AM

The carters are just plain loud. I had mine on the frame rail right next to the rear left wheel. Put some gasket material, or rubber in between surfaces to help keep down some of the noise. That helps to quiet down some of the vibration, but overall they are a loud performance fuel pump. I always kind of liked being able to hear the fuel pump from outside the car. Let's those clowns at the stoplights know not to mess with the 7. :D

31rx7 12-20-05 09:05 PM

Yep, loud. But good. Go faster and you won't hear it.
