Where do I start?
 

I am new to the RX7 world, but come from experience working on my Miata.

I have a non running 1984 with a 12A. It actually does run when starter fluid is sprayed into the carb. Just seeing that I was pretty excited since I was informed that is was sitting for 4 years. Knowing that I want to start with fuel delivery. Do I take out the fuel pump and test it first? Or is there an easier way to check if its delivering that I could do by myself with the pump still installed? Listening? Unhooking lines?

This is going to be a great project. Thanks for your advice in advance.

Well for starters Welcome to the DarkSide!!!!! And pics are a Must!!!! You should clearly hear the pump kick on when you turn the key if its operating fine.... You can also diconect a line and place into a gas can turn the key and see if any thing comes out.Before you go buy a new one make sure to check its getting power very simple using a testlight or dvm if you have one....Should you have to replace the pump its located right under the driver seat coverd by a metal plate one side drops down and reveals the pump when you remove the two bolts.

You also might wana look into rebuilding the carb since its old and will most likely need it. Besides that you should Also replace the Fuel filter you will find it when looking for the pump also obviously all fluids should be changed, plugs/wires/cap/rotor/coil should also be replaced.

Before getting to work I advise you download a copy of the fsm and read much knowledge is to be found there.

The fuel pump on 84-85 models come on when you start to crank the engine. Earlier models came on when you turned the key to the on position. :-)

As the poster above stated down load a copy of the FSM. All of the testing procedures are in there. Make sure you change out the fuel filter and verify that you have good flow from the fuel line that goes to the pump from the tank.

Thats odd I have an 84 gsl and before i put in the holley blues the pump would turn on when i turned the key. When you say 84-85 do you mean gslse's or all models? (For future reference I dnt want to give False advice)

All models. I have a 85 GS and fuel pump doesn't kick on until the key is in cranking position w/stock wiring.

If it's been sitting I would drop in a gallon of gas in it and drop it right back out just to see what the inside of the gastank is looking like. There is a drain bolt directly at the bottom of the tank. If the insides are all crudded up with rust, which is very possible, it'll save you the trouble of trying to pump all that stuff through your new fuel filter.

Maybe some clarification here? unless the 84+ RX7s are different, the fuel pump is UNDER THE CAR, not under the driver seat. Perhaps it was meant to say, under the car/under the driver seat?

As above stated;
-drain crap gas out of tank! no point plugging fuel system up further
-NOW change fuel filter ;)
-add new gas

fuel plugging issues could be at carb end too.

Doc is right, of course. You will probably find that your fuel pump relay (on the steering column under the dash) has a jumper wire installed. Most of my 84/85s came to me with the jumper installed.

Thanks guys. I guess my first priority is to find out where the fuel pump actually is. Haynes says its under a panel behind the seats (shelf), but it looks like the picture is for an in tank type of pump. By the way you guys are describing it, it sounds like its an in line pump. Haynes can be so misleading sometimes. :icon_tdow

It is an in-line pump, external of the tank, mounted under the car inboard from the left rear wheel, on top of a carrier plate. If you raise the car and look underneath, you'll see it snuggled up under there, and will see all the hard lines from the engine bay following the left frame rail to it.

Haynes manual contains several errors & generalizations; they do have useful pictures though.

Download an actual Mazda factory manual from Rx-7Doctor's sig, and you'll be way better equipped.

First check all your lines, make sure they are clean and clear. then obviously change the fuel filter etc. replace any bad rubber lines, or all of them if you just wanna do it once and be done with it :)

Then, jumper the fuel cut relay. I have provided the picture that helped me a whole bunch on this subject.

I put an in-line 5amp fuse to protect the fuel pump circuit in my jumper wire. food for thought.

It's been a while but I finally got around to working on this some more. I jumped the fuel relay and turned the key to the on position and got a few clunks. Sounds like a bad fuel pump to me. I let the housing down and took out the fuel pump (this was fun in a gravel driveway). Its still the original pump. Some slimey water / gas mixture leaked out when I disconnected the hoses. I snipped the wires at the pump and I am ready to start shopping for a new pump. I am not turning this into a race car by any means so I am hoping someone can tell me where I can get a compatible pump that can do the job? I am on a very tight budget so "good enough" is great for me.

wasn't necessary to clip the wires. the plug to it is right there under the storage bin.

I was thinking it was necessary if I use an aftermarket pump that doesnt use a plug...

that's true, but i like making things plug right in. but if u like the twist and tape method that works too. just make sure the splice is able to be kept inside the car.
