I was wondering what the largest wheel you could fit on a first gen w/o much modding?

The biggest I've seen is 17", and that's about as big as I'd want to go, otherwise you'll have to do some major mods (tubbing, etc) to fit anything bigger on...

How about widest 13'' or 14'' that you can put on there with very little or no modification? I know 13x7 is the widest up front for no modification, but dont know how much modification it would take to put 13x8's.

wide=more bump steer, more hydroplaning, etc.

Not practical for street, but OK for drag.

I was thinkin' 9" wheels. I think the tires look damn good as whitewalls!

Bump steer is not affected by the width of the wheels

Bump steer is caused when the steering/suspension geometry is poorly designed and when the suspension is in bump or droop travel the distance from the track rod pivot and the steering arm varies causing the wheel to actually steer when the suspension travel changes

ie the wheels will steer when you go over a bump

What wider wheels usually mean is

1. increased tracking (wheel tends to track white lines changes in road surface etc.)

2. increased wheel bearing load due to increased leverage on the hub

3. incorrect steering geometry as the centre of the tyre contact patch will not be the centre of rotation of the wheel = more scrubbing of the tyre/less stable

We need to hear from the membership...who has the widest largest rims on their car now that only required the fenderlip to be rolled? No wide body kits need answer....start a new thread for that group...

I've got Weds Autobahns....15" X 7" wide rims sporting 225/50 in back...

When i got my -SE it had 235/60/14 on the back... I believe the car was used for Auto-x.. Now i have 225/60/14 as winter tires and still no rubbing. I did get the fender lip rolled though...

What was the width of the RIMS?

They were the stock -SE rims... but Im not sure how wide they are. My Summer rims are 16x7 and i've had them tucked in the fender with no problem..

I know what bump-steer is, Mike. In North America it's also applied as steering kickback through the geometry due to excessive loads over bumps brought on by, for one, wider tires.

JMHO but big wheels are the scourge of the road. Anything past a +2 rim is nuts. With no sidwall, your breakaway forgiveness is far reduced, your ride goes to hell and your wallet gets strangley light. All for what? Looks? Cars with big stock wheels have had suspension mods to match. That often includes the mass of the assembly it connects too. Anything past plus 2 requires losts of suspension work to be correct. Also consider that not only the total mass of the wheel/tire combo makes a difference so does the rotating mass. Rotating mass differs with wheel design and who really lists the components of the wheel(spokes and hubs vs rim) and their weight breakdown. I prefer physics to looks.

My Enkeis are light but the stiffer low profiles on their 16" size, while cornering better, are far more sensitive to imperfections in the road.

I love a fast response to the wheel, but its wearing. I also like to skid before I roll over. Gives me time to pee my pants before I die. hehehhehehe

My ride with 13x8 rims with 225/45/13 hoosier radials. had to roll the fender lips to prevent cutting the tires. Although the Hoosier is not a street tire, sumitomo makes a 215/50/13 tire that is.

I have seen 13x9 with the same tire on it.
