What's different between SA & FB?
Mornin' all.
I was curious as to the differences between SA models and FB models. I know there was some redesign that took place in '81, would like to be more knowledgable about the differences so I can be assured of getting the right parts for my '80. Much of the differences are visual, the more rounded bumpers etc. Teh interiors also differ slightly in some areas. As for drivetrains, the engines are almost identical, with exception of more emmissions controls on FB's. I think the SA's have a differnt shifter that is in a different spot, but all the non-SE 5 speeds should be the same.

As far as I know the shifter is in a different place for the Sa's. A little further forward I think.
Also cant forget the dash and guage clusters. I think the Sa's have the better cluster with the center mounted Tach. I do like the guages them selves on the Fb better. |
Sa's are alittle lighter i believe, i may be wrong.

I'm not sure about that guy, i think the FB's have the fiberglass nose, rather than the bulky iron one of the sa's...but the sa's have less emissions?! I donno.

Everything I've read says SA's are lighter by quite a bit.

The rear-mounted shifter of the '82-on transmission makes for a fit problem in the RX4 as well. I had to find a good '79-81 transmission for my '74 RX4, which I now find myself needing to put in my '80 RX7 to replace the noisy unit in the car currently. Fortunately, I have a decent 5-spd ribcase to put back in the RX4, so I can live with that. Nothing wrong with keeping the RX4 at least somewhat original! As far as the SA emissions, my car has Kalifornia emissions, and it's still a pretty involved setup, though there is no catalytic converter. My car still has every stinkin' bit of emissions equipment intact and the amazing thing is it all works! I'ts pretty rare to find a bone-stock RX7, most have at least had a header put on them, at least most of the cars equipped with that horrible thermal-reactor.
Wasn't there also some sort of suspension change on the FB as well? Something to do with the Watts linkage or link lengths or something like that? Anybody know about that? Thanks to all for the info so far! -WG |

Man I wish I had camara to post some pictures of my 79 to play mind games on you guys.
Like said- the centerconsole is far differen't with a more modren design and the shifter position is moved back with a remote shift box on the tranny. Body is changed with smoother lower body lines; a more rounded front end and a rounded rear end with the wrap around tail lights, license plate is mounted below the bumper unlike the Sa's what had them mounted about the bumper with big "zit" illumanation lights. Also the sa's have the air-to-oil cooler compared to the water-to-oil cooler. Sa's have a 3 core raditor; fb's have a 2 core. 79 sa's have points ignition while 80 and later have electronic ignition. front suspension is improved on the fb's as well as the braking system. This is what I know off the top of my head right now, feel free to correct me. Like I said, I play mind games with rx7 nutheads. My car is a 79, but I have the front end off of a 83 Gsl so I have the more rounded look up front with the addition of the Mariah Motorsports airdamn. Also have the seats and door panels from a 83 gs. I prefer the style of the later guages myself, but I do enjoy the 130mph speedo in my 79 :). |
I'm getting one of those '79 speedos tomorrow! Just talked to a friend of mine about an hour ago. I haven't talked to him for about a year and was surprised to find that he had sold most of his rotary stuff, most recently a GSL with no motor but otherwise complete for $200.00!
I might add that the '80 electronic ignition differs from that found in later years in that the amplifiers (modules) are remote-mounted on the inside of the fenderwell, whereas the later ones have the modules mounted on the distributor, which is preferable due to the shorter lead lengths involved. This helps eliminate any "cross-triggering" due to the pulse being inductively coupled to the adjacent wire(s). The '81 and up distributors can be installed in any 4-port single-distributor rotary to eliminate the points. Too bad you don't have a camera, I'd like to see your car! -WG |
My '79 weighs in around 2350lbs stock, and I'm pretty sure the '81-up cars weigh in around 2500-2700 lbs...

To determine when a specific car was built, check the emmission control label on the rear of the driver's door jamb. The month and year of manufacture is given. There was a delay of approximately six weeks from this date to the arrival in this country. EXTERIOR: 1979 - '80 Nearly identical. Doors appeared smooth - actually narrow rubber molding covered the body crease. Taillights were separated by painted indentation. License plate mounted above bumper. Radio antenna 8 inches longer in 1980 for better reception. Early 1979 models (built in 1978) had only a left rearview mirror and the hood propping rod was on the right side instead of the left. with all of that said:
who knows if a dash from an 81+ will fit into a 79 which was manf. in sept or oct 78 and a later 79? I am just interested in replacing the top part that cracks from the sun. I dont want to replace gauges center console of glove comp. if I can help it. who knows what benifits I get out of removing emmisions and all the computer controls from an 84 or 85 12a? see my post on this |
An '81 dash will fit a '79. The change was in '83, I think.
Replacing the dash itself (the top part) requires the removal of almost everything, the center console, the gauge cluster, the glove box, etc. all have to come out before you can get to the final 4 nuts that are up under the top of the dash. You also have to remove some of the ducting to access the nuts. Quite a job. I've done it 3 times now and have the removal part down to about 30 minutes. Installation takes a bit longer as things need to be tweaked and aligned to make it look good, and there are the electrical connections as well. I'll let someone else tell you about the emissions equipment. I live in Oregon and don't have to go through any smog test. :D -WG |
