Whats better for Exhaust Tone/Sound Level?

Ok i am in this research and future purchasing battle with myself to see what exhaust setup would be ultimately better for what i am looking for. Let me tell you what I DO have right now that i am working from. A Racing Beat Header and a Rear Magnaflow Muffler. Now i am trying to decide what setup in the middle of these two existing items i should go with. Should i Buy a Presilencer then another Magnaflow muffler that then leads to my main rear Magnaflow? or...........Here let me break it down a little better:

RB HEader -> RB Presilencer -> Magnflow Muffler/Resonator -> Existing Rear Magnaflow

OR

RB Header ->Magnflow Muffler/Res -> Another Magnaflow Muffler/Res -> Existing Rear Magnaflow

Which the two MID magnaflows that i am thinking of would be these:

Im trying to tone down the sound alittle more (NOT SHUT HER UP..i like her louder than stock)...but just make the tone deeper and a little quieter than it is now. What do you guys think of these two Exhaust Directions i just posted? Thanks for the input fellas :)

I'd probably go with just the RB presilencer and see how you like it. If it's still a little too loud then add another presilencer/muffler

^^^well from the research (HAHA I DID SEARCH THIS) .....someone did this set up with JUST the RACING EBAT HEADER to RB PRESILENCER to MAGNAFLOW (or same type of straight thru muffler) and they said it was still very LOUD.....So i am thinking adding another muffler to the mix may tone it down a bit........But im not sure if one presilencer to one muffler is good...or use the 2 mufflers instead of the presilnecer would work just As good if not better?

Good point. I don't have any experience with Magnaflow's or anything. My set up will be RB header to RB muffler LOL

Go with the second setup. Its been pretty much proven that the RB presilencers are not as effective as everyone says they are. They simply aren't big enough.

Slightly off thread, but what about super traps ? Has anybody tried them on our cars ?

magnaflows flow great , but they are loud on a loud car . this setup may be over kill for your needs. if you were to use them use 2 on a n/a rx-7 or perhaps another louvered glass pack with the louvers facing the flow stream(would have to be a good glasspack). the supertraps arent worht the money they use back pressure to control sound.

Option 3 and 4. If you want to use a Magnaflow, go with the oval, it will fit, or go with the street version of the Borla, the XS-1.

Supertrapp's are a waste of time. They create far too much backpressure for any kind of performance if you want it quiet enough. I would even go as far as to say it would be more restrictive than the stock cats if you had enough disks in it to get it to a reasonable sound level. They sound like shit too.

i got a better idea;)

RB header-RB presilencer- current magnaflow- borla

i assure you it sounds great:D

I'm not sure magnaflows are the best for presilencers. I had two installed in the repu under the cab. Like the ones on ebay but 2.00" dia.

And they sounded SOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo quiet for the first few blocks then they got crispy and it was noticeably louder when I got home 15 min. later. A week later they were louder than that. Still better than the 20 year old rusty glasspacks they replaced though!

I think their packing is not high temp enough. It really should be 100% stainless packing to last.

As for supertrapps, they'd make a great tailpipe for my repu since there's so much room back there. but you really need a real muffler. The rotormotor is so loud if a supertrapp was used as a main rear muffler you'd need to use like only 5 discs to quiet it up. And the dyno has shown that a minimum of 21 discs = no loss in hp.

That's me. Here's what my car sounded like with the RB header, presilencer and a rear Magnaflow muffler:

Awful tone and very loud.

Here's the car with the same RB header and presilencer, but now with a Magnapack silencer and a Borla Turbo main muffler:

http://members.shaw.ca/deuteronomy/Borla.mp3

Incredible tone and a noise level that is just this side of legal, which means loud enough to hear it and be noticed, but not loud enough for the local constabulary to write you a ticket.

When I installed this setup, I did some tests and I found that the greatest improvement in sound quality came from the RB silencer. Running the car with open headers was excruciatingly bad, you could hear each exhaust cycle in the most annoyingly bad way. With the RB silencer installed, the noise level dropped by a good 30-40 % and the note was remarkably smoothed out. Adding the Magnapack and the Borla further quieted it down and provided a nice low tone, but without the RB silencer, I doubt it would sound nearly as good.

So my advice is to get the RB silencer, it's really worth every penny.

It seems like if you use Option B your exhaust would be overly complicated. I dont know how big magnaflows are, but cramming 3 mufflers under my car doesnt sound easy. Another thing I would think about is possibility of exhaust leaks. The more components you add the more likely you can end up with a leak. I cant remember what I paid for my RB silencer and muffler but it cant be that much more than buying a RB presilencer and another magnaflow? Your car looks awesome, just suck it up and put the good stuff on!

:) Thanks for the input guys...i think i know what im gonna do...i will keep you guys posted

Magnaflow mufflers are fully stainless packed. I have used one as a presilencer on my 82 with the 12A and it lasted perfectly fine. Magnaflow have a very nice tone too IMO.

Its not hard to get 3 mufflers under a 1st gen. If you use 2 14" long 4" round magnaflows as presilencers and one 5x8 18" long magnaflow as a rear muffler behind the axle the sound level should be within limits, and it will all fit under there too. 1 presilencer just after the header, 1 just before the axle, and the muffler behind the axle.
