what year is the engine?

I have a "85 GSL that underwent an engine swap before I bought it and I was wondering is there a way to tell what year the engine is from. The raeason that I ask is the exsaust manifold doesn't seem to fit there is a space between it and the block.
The car is running great bout it sounds like a broken lawnmower.

Well, in 81 I believe it was, Mazda added a boss (little lip basically) above the trailing plugs and below the leading plugs to ensure (I guess) the proper spark plugs were used. Prior to that, 3 electrode plugs were used, and in 81 4 electrode plugs were the specialty of the day. However, as to narrowing it down better than that, I'm not sure how you could tell by just looking at the block itself...

Well I finally looked at the engine and it does not have a lip above the spark plug boss so I guess that the engine is from a "81 or older, I suspect that it may be as early as a '79 engine as the guy reused the exshaust gasket and it has the holes for the lower ports (?) to the reactor.
I should be able to block these off just buy suning the newer gasket and manifold for a '85..... I hope.

Well I just compared the exsaust gasket to the ones on mazdatrix web site and the engine is a '79 is there any one who could tell me a little about the specifics of this motor it seems to run well but are there any differences that I should know about.
