What Is this wire called?
 

I posed on the forums a few weeks back about issues with my car starting. I took the starter off and found that this wire was a frayed mess and had disconnected from whatever it was connected to. It goes into the back if the starter solenoid. I added some pictures for reference. It looks like the fusible link that comes off the starter. Given the ends, it looks like it popped and needs to be replaced.

Hot start assist. It is a fusible link in case it makes contact with a ground somewhere.

Great to know, I had no idea it's part of the hot start.

Is it needed in order for the car to start?

Yes - I tried to remove mine and found that it is required. I made my own out of some heavy gauge insulated wire.

That isn't the correct one. You need the one that has the end white end on one side and the looped end on the other. Like what is in your first pics on your current setup. Also, not all fusible links are the same. The resistance varies on where it is used.

You don't need it to start the engine. Just hold the pedal open slightly when you crank it; this accomplishes the same thing the engineers were trying to do. Making it more convenient by adding complication.

It's not necessary for the car to start/run properly. I deleted mine since it was unnecessary with an engine swap.
