What size for electric fan mod?

Hey everybody. I have a bone stock 1984 GSL.
All the original crap still on it like california emmisions, soon to all be gone.
I want to put on an electric fan but not sure what size to use. Or for that matter, what amount of CFM it should be moving. Any info would be great, I would like to do it all this weekend.
Thanx

lots of people either use the 16'' flex a lite black magic 450 fan at least i think its 16'' or they use fans from taurus' and fiero's from the j-yard. i dont know the size of those though. there is a huge price diff. between the black magic ($200), and a junkyard fan ($35 maybe). as far as the cfm goes, i totally forgot i'm sorry maybe some one else can answer. i think ppl have used 14-18'' e-fans in replace of the stock clutch fan.

i found this but I know it won't cover not even most of the radiator and that bothers me.
I preffer to have a fan that covers at least 80% of the radiator.
check out these specs though, and tell me what you all think.

Here is the ad:

Slim Fan -- For Sale: 12'' Slim Radiator Fans. The specs are: High performance 12volt electrical cooling fan Can be set up as either a pusher or puller fan 10 Blade fan Only 2.5'' deep Flows 1200-1450cfm in Puller mode and 1350-1550cfm in Pusher mode

sorry i was wrong its the black magic 150. it pulls 2800 cfm. thats optimum. i dont know about your 1200 and 1550. it might get the job done. by the way its 5am go to sleep!!! haha not like i am though.

Need 2100cfm minimum to cool effectively, if its in your budget, get the black magic. rx7doctor

Sorry to hijack but I'm also interested in this. We're talking about the fan here eh? http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/black-magic.html What's the difference between the 60, 150, 155, and 165 models (ie. which one would work with the RX?)

Also, it says the adjustable thermostat control is included but how is the temperature sensor installed? If I do the mod I definately want a functioning on/off temperature switch...

Electric fan replacement....my first post!!!!

I agree with RX7DOC about the black magic. I tried the Victoria RX7 catalog electric
fan and it was totally inadequate. I have an '80 GS with an 84 SE engine so I replaced the underflowing electric one with the black magic. Use a relay to control the power to it and I have a Wolf 3dV4 which handles the thermo on/off control via an aux out to the relay. I installed a simple manual switch (in the old manual choke hole on the dash) so on long highway cruise I can turn the fan off...unless it is 90+ degree the temp stays ok with no fan at highway speeds.
Rx7 aluminum engines really don't handle overheating well ($$$$)so err on the side with extra cfm/capacity.
I got my black magic from Summit Racing, the first one was defective and they replaced it no problem. About $185 for the non-thermostat model a couple years ago.

:bsmeter:
100% BS. there is no need for a black magic fan. A 1800 CFM fan, like a 14" derale will do the job. In fact, a simple fiero fan will do.

Yea, fiero gt fan is what to use. Simply zip tie that bad boy to the rad and you are good to go! That fan will cover the long rad completely ! ! !

Felgar 09-15-04 03:22 PM

What do you use for a temperature switch with the Fiero fan?

Siraniko 09-15-04 05:08 PM

when it comes to electrical stuff, use a relay (regular el cheapo auto parts fog lights relay). then either use a toggle switch OR connect it to + terminal of ur coil OR buy auto fan kit.

Felgar 09-15-04 05:52 PM

Right... I'd definately go the auto fan kit route. Pretty much any kit will do then?

The_Dude 09-15-04 06:16 PM

I always heard that fieros and tempos and etc work really well ... I will be doing the swap also this winter ( while it's parked :P ) And I'll try those out ... if it don't work right, oh well 40$ in the whole I'll get the black magic :)

Eric.

I got a fan from perma cool and it has its own switch to cut it on

Sorry for hijacking but after you get rid of all your emission stuff how do you plan on passing smog every other year. I also live in CA and there is a bunch of mods I want to do to my fb but Im afraid I wont pass smog if I do them.

If you want to go the cheap route.... Miata's have two electric fans on them. One is slightly bigger than the other (at least on the Miata I parted out...) and with some steel (or Aluminum) stock, bolts right onto the radiator. Wiring it is a tiddy-bit trickier, but since I wired it to a switch I don't have any good ideas for an auto-on situation like a street car. You could probably find a switched positive lead somewhere nearby, and just tap the fan into that. If there isn't an open ground in the same place, just ground it to the frame somewhere.

I dont know if their easilly available in USA and so... Here in RSA,we use the BMW 3 series aircon fan.Its 15" in size, has babana blades, and is thin enough to be placed in the stock fan location.I`am not sure if what the CFM of it is,but it works very good on Rotaries.
