what kind of headunit do you have?

I am going to replace my headunit and I just wanted to know what kind of headunits you guys had and how you like them. I dont want something that stands out a lot, just something that could almost look stock, but has all the functions that i need...(mp3, sub out) also i was hoping for red buttons and display to match all the other interior lights.. Post pics if you got em!! thanks ~TIM (p.s. if you have something that sounds like what im looking for let me know and i might buy it off you.)

nothingbutrotor 10-31-05 11:56 PM

I have a JVC KD-G700, I really like it, but I haven't installed it on my RX7 yet, I haven't had the cash to get the dash kit, and I have a feeling i will screw something up if I do it :)

I had it in my old car (a tracker :( ) and it sounded awesome with 2 polk 6 1/2s and 2 4" infinity kappas from like 1996.

It will read MP3s and WMV files, and has sub out and all that good stuff.

MattG 11-01-05 12:25 AM

I have a Sony CDX-M7815X. It is the shiznit! A few swipes with the dremel and that bad boy was in. I put in all new infinity speakers all around and ran new streetwire for all of them. I think I have some pics. I have them put they are to large I cant figure out how to make them smaller. Dang!

sony and jvc SUCK

i've just bought an alpine cda 7893...great deck

IMO great decks are alpine, eclipse, some pioneer....

pretty much any company will make entry level garbage, and then
better ones...it all depends on what you are looking for in a deck

OtakuRX 11-01-05 07:37 AM

I run a cheapo Dual deck but amazingly it isn't that bad esp for $89 and it has MP3 support and an aux in so I hook my iPod to it. Not that great but it does the job, the exhaust is so loud and all that I didn't want to spend much.

I have a sirus ready Kenwood KDC- MP225...MP3 and WMA ready...I probably would like it but its not in yet...lol...but Kenwood does make awesome stereo equipment I have a massive home stereo system shakes the beams in my house barely 1/5th of the way up...oh it also has audio-video hookup...go Kenwood

JessicaR 11-01-05 04:43 PM

Mine is stock with a cassette adapter that's hooked up to my iPod photo. My am/fm reception is perfect and I carry about 7000 songs with me. What I really want to change though are the speakers...oh and the joystick in the center console that controls the balance and fade...it's so loose that when I take off too quickly all the sound gets pushed to my rear speakers!! It's so annoying!!

jfachner72 11-01-05 05:14 PM

I have a Sony CDXC-910 It was rated the "BEST" deck ever made by several car stereo maga as well as many in the audio business. The illumination is the exact color of the Rx's and it comes with a really cool remote that will take the place of your "Joystick Fader"

The only problem is that it was discontinued and now you can only find them on E-Bay.com

The price new was $900.00 and you MUST use amps with it since it is a preout only unit.

The sound quality is prefect and in the last 8 years mine hasnt skipped a beat even once.

Do a google search for it and take a look at the reviews yourself.

As far as the alpine guys.....Alpine was good in the 80's and early 90's before it was made in japan.

Nak.

I wouldn't buy anything that you can get at one of the large Big Box stores. I have a Nakamichi head unit and it is abolutely amazing. Nakamichi is more about sound quality and aimed at audio purists. You won't find flying dolphin screensavers, a clutter display, or a 32 band EQ (only bass, mid, treble). But you will find a simple, clean, cleaner sounding head unit.

I just took a look at their website, and it looks like their designs are starting to fall off a bit and are influenced by the VW/Audio blue/red lighting scheme, especially on the MP3 compatible reciever. That blows! But take a look at the CD-400 for an example of the clean design. I don't think that is MP3 compatible. Maybe they will release a clean one

I have the CD-45z. It's no longer made. But it's been working fine. The only problem I have is it sometimes skips when I corner hard, I guess the centrifigual force pulls the lazer back. I think it's only left turns (those are usually the fastest ones!) But it's a very minor problem.

It does have sub outs and aux inputs for your pod, too.

Right on.

edit - the CD-500 looks likes a winner, assuming you can change the display to amber (which you should be able to do, as with all Naks)

Hey brown Is that what you call a "superior" head unit. My sony never skips no matter what im doing, and it gets the job done so im proud of it. Plus I think it looks a lot better than that.

DAVID GRIMES 11-02-05 12:40 PM

Pioneer DEH-3700 I believe. Gets it done and looks nice. The lowest price that plays MP3's. Got it for 139.00 locally.

Yes, it is. Ask any audiophile which they would prefer, and I'm sure that 99% of them would go with the Nak. Looks are a personal preference, but the Nak is such a clean, classic design. And the sound quality is incredibly clean (24 d/a conversion).

Sony is just a name, and I find a lot of their products to be complete crap. Lexus used to use Nak systems in their cars, I'm not sure if they still do. Just read some reviews of the Nak head units.

And, based on the specs the OP gave, the Nak seems to fit his bill to a T. I will take some my pics of my install.

Right on.

JessicaR 11-02-05 01:42 PM

My brother used to install audio systems for a living and he said that the RX-7 is far from being the best car in which to invest a lot of money for a stereo system if what you want is great sound. He recomended I add plenty of sound dampening materials (i.e. Dyna-mat) when i get it painted and all the carpeting and seats are out. He also said that a good rule of thumb (though not set in stone) is that clean sound at high levels needs a good head-unit, amp and speakers; where as a good, clean sound at low or normal volume would be best served by having good speakers.

Finaly, he added that instead of Dynamat, a much more inexpensive alternative is to use a material that you find at roofing supply places or a lumber yard. It looks like a thin sheet of tar on one side and the other is a sheet of aluminum and it comes in rolls about 1 foot wide and 10 feet long (he used it in my old izuzu). He compared the products, and for the amount you save (it's 1/3 the cost of Dynamat) it's a much superior deal.

As far as head units though, I still like my Ipod. I hope some manufacturer develops a headunit where I can just insert my iPod as if it where a cd or tape, and have access to all my music!

John64 11-02-05 03:11 PM

I will chime in on this one. I used Fatmat on the entire car prior to the install of my system. Great stuff to use, but slow on shipping. The head unit I'm using is an Alpine CDA 9833 with an iPod interface. If you don't want skipping 100%, then using an iPod is the way to go. I just plug it in the glove box and control it from the headunit.

theres a link to the specs. Of course I didnt buy them from there. Crutchfield is way over priced! But they do have a good list of the specs.

They sound sweet because I listen to alot of techno and rock and they are great for both!!!

Top EQ was to tailor sound for the kick panel and the door speakers...the bottom EQ trimmed the sound for the back speakers and bass gain for the subs...

you must be a perf. installer

YapaKanichi 11-03-05 10:12 PM

I like my head unit a lot guys, I mean the sound output is abolutely rad and matching with the infinity kapa in the front I believe those are it with some polk audio in the rear, wow it sounds good and looks good too. One thing I do love about mine is the fact I can completely turn off all display, so at night got the tunes kicking and no bright light in my face. Yes it has a display, but I keep on the racing vette and elise. Now the display does have a contrast control with 3 different settings on what dim you want. It has outputs in the rear as well. I can link up with a sirius I believe or xm one of the two, I just gotta get the adapter and bam I'm listening to satellite radio.

Now the front 4" infinity were a tight squeeze to get it, they were pretty deep, but they are very well worth it.

I've used Sony speakers and amps, and I have to say that they were some of the worst units I've ever dealt with. Sony makes a lot of kick ass stuff, but when it comes to car audio they suck.

I beleive Nakamichi still makes the Lexus sound systems, with the exception of the Mark Levinson system. For anyone who's never heard a Mark Levinson system, go find a Lexus dealership, now. It is the best sounding stereo you will ever hear in a car, period. My dad opted for it in his new GS300. 14 speakers, 11 channel external amplifier, with discrete 5.1 digital surround through 7.1 architecture. Yeah.

jayroc 11-03-05 11:39 PM

Stock stereo, EQ AND speakers. oh, yeah. pimpin
I got the surround sound adjust knob next to the power window switches too.
I am thinking about taking it out, though cause it has static like a mofo, but.. radios are nice to have.

GavinJuice 11-04-05 12:36 AM

Nak makes some fantatic decks. The thing i love is their design. They're not flashy with crazy ass colors, mechanical faceplates yadayada. More shit to make someone wanna steal it. Nak is the one deck i would want in my rx, expecially if i wanted some nice tunes without worrying about some bastard getting greedy.

Anyone have any thoughts on Clarion's DXZ655MC or DXZ755MC. Saw the 755 yesterday and looks like it'd be a pretty close match on backlight at least (has a color called "warm amber" which looks to match the FB backlight ). What about sound quality and performance though?

Let's dredge this one up and see what you guys are running these days.

Naturally, my spare factory headunit was dead and when I went back to the one that came with the car, the display was out, so... I'm all about the OEM look, and would love a function factory unit, but this latest experience has got me contemplating something aftermarket.

tommyeflight89 06-12-14 06:09 PM

I am almost done installing a Kenwood MP425 with some regular speakers front and rear, nothing fancy or loud.

I love the look of the new-school single DIN unit dropped in the classic interior of the FB.

I finished cleaning up the original owners wiring, cut out the center console to accept the single DIN unit, and bent/hacked the dash supports out of the way. Two small brackets are in the way that support the heater/AC controls.

As for wiring it in, my only idea was to tap the power from the cigarette lighter. It has an "always on" and its own ground. I would then disable the cigarette lighter.

There are plenty of switched wires to get the switched signal from.

How have people been wiring their decks in? I am hesitant to run a + battery wire just for a 100W sound system....
