What fuel should i run???

Hey Guys,

I'm 17 and new too rotors (im a bit of a noob), i just brought my first car in august and proud to say its a series 2 rx-7 (what a first car hey) but im unsure what fuel to use. i have heard so many different arguments so i figured u guys'd know best. So what fuel should a 1981 series 2 run no? unleaded or lead replacement?

Thanx guys for the help...

And sorry im a noob but im picken it up fast... lol :bigthumb:

low octane is great for these cars

but what type should it run???

i run just regular 87 octane pump gas and it's worked great i also prmix though good luck wit the new car!

unleaded

what'd happen if u ran leaded (replacment) throught it?

does it have lubricating properties? or am i drunk?

If your car still has a catylitic converter I'm pretty sure the replacement leaded fuel will burn the hell out of it. I think thats why they quit selling leaded fuel in the States because it would kill the cats. Also, I think the lead in gas was used as like a form of higher octance because it would slow the burn of fuel. Since rotaries have a fairly slow burn anyways, there would be no point in running the leaded fuel. It would be like running 93 octane instead of 87, there is no benefit.

I think I remember reading something about leaded fuel increasing compression... but maybe I'm just hopped up on goofballs :p:

Rx7s were designed for unleaded tho.

it allows higher compression (high octane)

He's got an '81 which means cats which means NO LEAD...87 octane unleaded is all you need and it's also the cheapest...a nice deal all around. When you turbo, SC or go nitrous, you'll have to rethink your timing and gas requirements, but we can cross that bridge when you get to it...;)

Lead had two main functions. One was to raise the octane level and the other was to protect the valve seats from wear by coating them in lead oxide. Unleaded engines run hardened valve seats to overcome this.

The minimum octane requirement of unleaded fuel in Australia is 91 RON. It's nice being able to get 98 from the pump though. :D

well thanx heaps guys... unleaded it is... hehehe. i was just a bit unsure because it says use regular or low lead pertol to the left of the pertol cap and i figured that regular in 1981 may have been leaded.

u guys are great :)

So everyone with a 1981 rotor runs it on unleaded? And is it true that high octane doesnt make any difference in the rotary engines?

They measure it differently though, aussie/nz 91 = US 87, aussie 96 = US 91ish and their 93 is our 98.

So they don't use RON? Trust the US to use something other than what the rest of the world does. :D j/k

Thats why we are a superpower, we say fuck the rest of you. We do it our way, or get the fuck out. :D

No offense to any other countries, I would love to travel to them one day and sample their women.
