What is the filter inside the gas tank called?
 

Ok so in earlier posts I talked about rust in my tank. Getting that cleaned by a pro, replaced the fuel filter and replacing the fuel pump too. Question is about that filter inside the gas tank that is put on the end of the intake tube (orwahtever you call it) Mine was brown with rust and would most likely be better off replaced that rinsed off. Anyone know where I can get one? Went to Oreilys but they could not find it at all. Thanks in advance.

i recently refurbed my fuel tank. i had to replace that item also. i think its called a fuel sock (at least thats what the tech called it) and i think you can only get them from mazda. i hope this helps.

Yep, filter sock and it's a dealer only item for the 1st gens. 2nd gen replacement pumps come with them.

You can sometimes wash them out if their clogged lightly.

Some say never do this I've herd, can't recall why (because it's so cheap?) after 80k roughly miles on my fc it was pretty clean as mentioned below but one area was alil blocked, which would later on cause more and more bogging on turns.

My fc's had lil black things in it like charcoal, just alil, pour some gas through it (inside) and it should pop out, then i hit it with water from the sink after the gas evaped and let it dry off.

I can't comment about the fb's; the one I had the PO had the tank & lines replaced :)

i call it a "pickup filter". its a dealer only item. i can post the part number if you'd like btut i need to know if you have a GSL-SE or not.

I do have a GSL-SE. The piece is not clogged, I am thinking that I will just wash it really good and then soak it in gas. Unless I can get one shipped to me quickly or not.

Dave post both numbers if you would that way others of us that need them also can go ahead and order them

sure, the part numbers for the filters for the pickup are as follows from 84-85. pre 84 did not have a pickup filter or a removeable pickup assembly for that matter:

S, GS, GSL: GA97-42-113

GSL-SE: g037-42-113A

you can either leave it off, which is like the 83 and earlier cars, or there is a Chrysler one that fits (you have to do some searching to find it)

I was working on my son's 85 GSL tank, and the fuel tank filter disintegrated as I removed the fuel pickup tubes. The original OEM part, GA97-42-113, is no longer available. However, if you order the fuel tank filter part UB39-42-113a, it is the perfect fit.

That part number UB39-42-113a, fits the return pipe, not the supply pipe

Sorry, but the part fits the supply line( the bigger of the two lines that go into the tank) perfectly . It was a perfect match for the one I was replacing.

You don't need the sock at all , they sell universal ones online though.
