What do i stand a chance against?

I have an '83 GSL w/ a RB midpipe - otherwise stock. I was wondering what i would chance against in a drag.

i was thinking civics/accords up till about 1995 (except maybe the EXs).

Well

since you and i have basically the same mods, let me tell you.
you can wax the little pesky civic hatchbacks and 4 doors. but yeah, the ex civics have the upgraded sohc motor. (vtec).
you can hang with v6 stangs for awhile, then they pull away. the thing with the older hb civics is that they might get a good launch but you will eat them up going thru 3rd gear. but over-all just have fun messing with whom ever you choose. get some headers and a tuned carb (yaw power) and then you can really have some fun.
Josh

PS-let me how you do!

I dunno what you can beat, but this needs to be in the 1st gen section...

Well, I have a friend with a new ford Escort ZX2, a '99 I believe with nothing done to it. He really wants to race me, he thinks he can burn me but I have observed the way his car accelerates and revs, and the RX7 revs a whole lot faster, true the ZX2 is lighter but its front wheel drive, I hate front wheel drives. I haven't had a chance to burn him yet because I still only have my learners permit. But I only have about 4 months until I get my license, and then i'll show him a real car(hehe).

P.S. I'll let you know when I burn him.

JoshP 09-27-01 03:44 PM

hey RR Guy!

what mods do you have on your car?
cuz i think i would get waxed by one. right now, that is...hehehe.
let me know how you do.

It all depends how you drive it. When i firstgot my liscense i didnt know how to drive my car that great. I still dont know everything. Anyways my buddies 87 Prelude took me out but i didnt know how to launch. Now i can hang with some 6 cylinder cars, it all depends. I launch at about 3K because i find that the best for my car.

JoshP 09-27-01 03:53 PM

concentrate!!!!

one thing that i have been having trouble with lately is concentrating on my car, not the race. i just need to concentrate on my car, and at the end of the track look back and see how bad i dusted the guy. that's my advice to you, look at your tach, know your car and race your car. don't race him, race your car. kind of a play on words, but it is true.

Well, the only thing I have had done is put a brand new exhaust on it, didn't get any precats on it and a high velocity main cat, went from stock exhaust piping(I believe it was 1 and 3/4) to a 2 and 1/2 inch piping and a high velocity turbo muffler, OH and I can't forget about the K&N Airfilter. That is all.

So Josh P, they might beat you off the line by about 10 feet, but once you get that thing above 3500 RPM's, the ZX2(depending on driver skills) should get burnt.

You'd be surprised what you can beat. Watch your tack and don't shift until you NEED to - take advantage of your rev limits in 2nd and third - thats usually where the short sprint street races are won and lost. Oh yea, get a header / high flow exhaust, a little advance on the timing (be careful here), run it a little rich, and some decent tires and you'll win more than your lose

PS - watch out for the front wheel drives off the start - they have difficulty with a straight launch

How fast was your last run?

How can you improve upon it? If this isn't obvious, experiment with different things. (I used to shift at 8400/8200/thru at 7400, then I dropped a TON of time by shifting at 7000/7000/6500)

What else is holding you back? Change it.

Little by little you'll be amazed at what you'll start beating. (Tons of Civics and Preludes, plenty of mid-80s GM V8 products, etc) Plus the practice will hone your light-cutting skills, and you can easily beat someone 1/2-1 second quicker than you, just because they can't cut a light for shit. (15.9 with a .550 r/t beats a 15.2 with a 1.4 r/t)

My first run this spring was something like 16.8 at 82. Now, I consistently go a second quicker, sometimes even better. Continual improvement ROCKS. :D

Rev the shit outta the engine. Make the other guy say "why the hell isnt he shifting?" I find that I would lose HP after 6500 7000 with the stock headers. Throw a set of headers on there and that will free up a ton of ponies. A carb on there should do a decent amount... Remember, its all about the launch and how you drive it. When you have an engine that makes all its HP at the top end and is so rev happy you need to use it to you're advantage... I never lost to a Mugen and beat a couple of 305 powered cars... Hey only one way to find out what you are doing, and who you can beat. Race em...

Those focuses run mid-high 15s if I remember the article I read, and the 6cyl Mustangs were only slightly faster... So you should be able to get there without all that much trouble...

Just be careful of a black mustang with gold racing stripes :D
