The reason i've said a word about V8's is this,,,Every person here, who turbo'd there 1st gen has, (1) spent over budget.(2)had to buy some really expensive parts.
(electronics)(3)It seems that they are disapointed, the car is not as fast as hoped for ( granted, the car IS faster)(4)maintance, you've got to be totally in to it, and have the bucks allready if something fails, one just can't throw a turbo on and think thats it !! Now don't get me wrong. I dig MY 12a stock 82, I know for stock my 7 goes really good, it's surprizing...and an -SE would be faster/better. To me. to pull up next to a 1st gen at a light and hear the sound of a hi-performance V8 (like a boss 302) would just make me smile and say 'fuck yeah' !! Not to many cars still have the balance of a rotory engine RX7 for the twisty's though IMO

If for some insane reason I was going to put a V-8 in an RX7, I would consider the old aluminum block Buick as a likely candidate. -WG

A good V8 hardly vibrates at all - next to an inline 6 it's among the most balanced piston engine produced in significant numbers (I don't include V12s or W16s for that reason)

However, it's still pushrod technoligy in a tiny, nimble car.

Those who knock V8s have to remember a certain American who made a name for himself by stuffing V8s into a small, nimble British sportscar called the A/C Cobra - so much so that decades later he'd convinced himself he'd created the whole car.

Thos who knock rotaries and favour V/8 swaps have to remember the whole unibody was engineered around a firewall hugging, breadbox sized engine that uses a completely different technoligy than other combustion engines in cars, thanks to a dedicated team of tireless engineers valiantly pursuing rotary perfection while V8 manufacturers like GM failed at similar attempts

Certainly a straight-six is one of the smoothest piston engines, but still not as smooth as a rotary.


Regarding GM, the Monza was originally designed to use a rotary engine, but GM decided against it because they felt that if an American company put a rotary in a car, it would lend legitimacy to the rotary design which was viewed with much skepticism at the time. Indeed, the longevity problems with the carbon-seal motors almost killed Mazda in the mid '70s. -WG

Ummm dont you mean Toyota? Well I dont think putting a boat anchor in the front of your rx is a wise idea either. These cars are unique for only a few reasons their powerplant being one of them. Don't butcher the car if you want a v8 in a tiny car put it in a geo or something.

There needs to be a V8 corner in this very Forum so the mods can simply move these painful threads every time they pop their ugly boat anchor heads....or maybe find a way to ship the whole thread directly to the V8rx7 site....;)

I personally don't like V8s in RX-7s, but to each their own.

I was just saying that some V8s are nicely balanced, and that Lexus is a good example of such.

I'm still impressed by their now 12-year-old publicity stunt of pouring champagne into a pyramid of glasses balanced on the hood of a Lexus (with engine running!) and not spilling a drop...

Well, the NOS most of the time,,comes as a kit. JEGS is a good place to check, price ??? i'd say a good system would go from $ 500.00 - $ 600.00. I guess your a 12a/nikki ,,right ?? there is a plate that goes between the carb. and the intake. it's got holes in it ,and the intakes studs hold both plate and carb. in that plate there are small nozzles that spray the NOS and it mixes with the air/fuel

Say what you want to... you can build up rotarys cheap... bottom line... the blocks are cheap... good core, gasket set, seals, are not that expensive... it all comes down to how much research you have done... the majority of the money that goes into a rotary setup is a clutch b fuel c traction d turbo comp... the same as any other turbo car... the motors are cheaper as long as YOU DO THE WORK YOUR SELF... running a rotary also saves a BUNCH of wieght... if your not running alot of nitrous or alot of boost on a 12 or a 13b your not going to get outragous hp numbers... alot of people blow up motors BECAUSE THEY LACK THE ABILITY TO TUNE THE ENGINE WITH THAT MUCH OXYGEN GOING IN IT... go buy a 302 if you want put it in it... or save your self a couple hundred lbs and put a turbo on the car... tuneing cars isnt easy... not always real cheap... the great storys you hear about people doing v8 swaps in rotarys are becuase THEY HUNT FOR DEALS AND JUNK YARD PARTS!!!

oh yah I have about $1200 into a moderatly moded na 13b 1st gen... the deals are out there MOTIVATE YOUR SELF SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DONE HESITATE... if you do THE PARTS WILL BE GONE!!! This is christmas time and tis the season to buy cheap parts ;)

I sold my 84 GSL-SE to but a sweet 90 Mustang GT. I love the GT and it's easy to work on and understand, but I missed the "R". Anyway I just picked up an 85 GSL yesterday for a great deal. I love the rotary and always will. Dont ruin a nice RX-7 with a small block. If you want a Mustang or camaro, then buy one. I missed the sound and smell of a wankel, so I went back. I will keep the 5.0, and the "R", but would not transplant a smallblock motor in the rotary. There is something to be said for 100HP per litre in old technology.
