What is this cable? --pics--

Thanks for the help.

I was trying to remove an after-market cruise control someone installed in the 80's. There was a black wire and a white wire, braided, plugged into it. The wire went up and through the firewall, down a cable, and plugs into a gizmo that plugs into the transmission. I suspect the cable is the speedometer cable, but I don't know what the wire is for. Right now it doesn't hook to anything other than the gizmo. So what I'm wondering is:
  1. What is the wire supposed to be doing?
  2. Is this really the speedometer cable?
  3. What is the gizmo it is plugged into (which the cable goes into as well) that hooks to the transmission?

Thanks!
First are the cable and wire coming from the firewall near the oil filter.

Second is the thing the wire is plugged into, and that the cable goes into as well.

Hard to tell from the pic, but that looks to be an aftermarket pulse generator for a cruise control - - one that goes inline with your mechanical speedo cable, which is the large black cable.

DivinDriver, you da man. I think you might be right. I have no idea what one is, but searching pictures of other ones brings up things that look sort of similar. Unless you think otherwise, I suppose I'll just leave it alone for now. It's in kind of an awkward spot to get at whether you lift the back or front of the car, and it doesn't seem like it impacts performance.

Thanks!

Yep! I was just digging around my engine bay the other day and that is definitely the speedometer cable. The wiring goes to something aftermarket, I can tell you that much because I ran two aftermarket gauge sensors through that same spot.

Oh thanks guys was wondering this too myself guy I bought the car form had cut this cable this was of great help!!

Just a question, where does this cable connect to like we're abouts is the other end. Like I said before the guy had cut this cable and I cant find where it goes?

The cable is the speedometer cable, so if that's what you mean, it goes in through the firewall and the other end goes to the transmission. That's probably not what you mean, though, because I can't see why anybody would cut their speedometer cable. The white and black wires connect to the pulse generator (which, in my case, was installed in-line with the speedometer cable. The other end of the wire went though the firewall and plugged into a control module that came with the cruise control (which I've removed.) I left the pulse generator in for now as I can't imagine it's harming anything and I don't feel like getting under the car right now, but it does cause the speedometer cable to sag a bit.
