Weird problem

Ok guys, My 7 has been running good but then, lately, on startups its been blowing white and blue smoke out the exhaust. I've read about it being fuel and coolant. Other thing, when I let it warm up all the way it doesn't smoke anymore. I emptied a quart of oil and put in a lot of lucas heavy duty and still smoked. I do have a dowel pin leak though. I also have noticed the temperature rising more than halfway, so I once let off the gas, turned on heater and went back down to 1/2 now. I noticed my top radiator hose is coller than the bottom.

I'm thinking maybe the thermastat? I'll try and check it later, maybe. I don't know the last time the owner had a coolant flush. I also noticed when I have the car on the coolant bottle will rise above full, when off it goes back down a little below full. What do you guys think? I've searched too.

dont quote me twink but it sounds like a water jacket seal is gone but i dont know why the coolant is rising is there bubles in it? sounds like what my car does but it stops smoking..mine does it casue its cold here and the coolent getting injected into the motor but yours sounds like a gasket

dont know all that much about that lol ime new:P

Mike

I'm not sure. I also think it could be the radiator cap not holding pressure. When i took it off it didn't really do the pssst. Oh ya guys, Do I really have to get an oem thermostat? Will the mazda dealerships have them?

rx-7 obsessed 12-13-06 05:32 PM

haha aiet well i tried lol i dont show my face on here enough:P thought i would give some imput

twinkletoes 12-13-06 05:35 PM

It might be, you never know till you find out. Thanks anyways, god bless

rx-7 obsessed 12-13-06 05:37 PM

hey are u 15 or 16 man ? random question reason asked is because there are not enough younger people into these cars lol sorry for the randomness its a bit off topic

twinkletoes 12-13-06 08:46 PM

bump

Kentetsu 12-14-06 01:06 AM

Make sure that the oil level is not too high. Also, replacing the thermostat would be a good idea...

twinkletoes 12-14-06 01:41 AM

Ya, I know^, I'll try and get a thermostat soon too.

Update, I just found a little puddle of coolant on the engine right under the mixture screw on the carb.

trochoid 12-14-06 01:46 AM

Yes, oem thermostat only. Order it from the dealer, and pay dearly, or RB/Mazdatrix. The puddling by the intake is usually a sign of the intake o-rings leaking. That would explain the smoking and lack of pressure in the cooling system, unless the leak is elsewhere, i.e., top radiator hose, thermostat neck, rad cap.

twinkletoes 12-14-06 01:56 AM

Oh, ok. Sweet, rock on, thats no biggie. Will I have to rebuild the carb to switch the intake o rings? The leak is definatley under the the mixture screw so its not the radiator hoses, or the rad neck, thermostat. I'll see and get a oem thermostat asap and i'll do a radiator flush wi'll im at it. Put in some water wetter as well. I think the rad cap is bad also, do I have to get one from mazdatrix or can I get one at autozone?

trochoid 12-14-06 02:02 AM

Nope, the o-rings are between the intake manifold and engine, along with the intake gasket. You can pic up a rad cap anywhere.

twinkletoes 12-14-06 02:05 AM

Yes, glad to hear that. Thanks everybody, God bless.

I'll update you guys when I get everything and do the flush and intall the new parts.

twinkletoes 12-14-06 06:14 PM

Just bought everything except a radioator cap off of mazdatrix. I'll get a radiator cap at autozone.

twinkletoes 12-18-06 07:22 PM

Hey, guys. I got everything from mazdatrix today. I'll be taking the carb off tomorrow probably and then the intake later. i'll update youguys again when I get her running with the rad flushed, and new paarts installed and car running

Naegleria_Fowleri 12-18-06 07:36 PM

Good luck with everything.

XLR8 12-18-06 07:53 PM

^good luck,... my 12A has the same symptoms. I will be doing the same thing as well. Also, be very careful loosening the intake bolts.

twinkletoes 12-18-06 08:35 PM

I know^, I will. Thanks guys.

twinkletoes 12-18-06 09:01 PM

Hey guys, I haven't started yet. but about too. Will there be a big mess taking off the intake maniflod?

trochoid 12-18-06 09:30 PM

Without draining down the coolant, yes.

Im 17 and getting one soon i hope. I love these cars. I know alot about piston engines and still im going back to the wankle. woot woot reppin the young ones out there.

rx-7 obsessed 12-19-06 11:19 AM

^^ i know alot about pistons to man. I owned a 1986 chrysler laser and i traded it for 2 rx's 85 gsl -se and an 86 with a blown motor with 125 k on it. I 2 quit on pistons i wanted to be uniqe and in the world these days nething and everythign has been done with piston engians but we can do work to ours and smoke our piston counterparts

It doesn't matter which engine is your engine of choice - either one can be built to destroy the counterpart.

twinkletoes 12-19-06 06:29 PM

Okay guys, I got the carb off, pretty easy. Only hassle was I had a normal 12 mm wrench. So It was tuff to get to the 4 nuts holding it down. I'll update you guys later. I also tested the new thermostat and Its working perfectly.
