Weird acceleration problem

I have been searching but can’t find the answer to my question.

I’ll be at a dead stop, give it the gas and good acceleration than all of a sudden no power my tack just goes up like normal but no power. Than after a few RPM’s later the acceleration kicks back in :wallbash: . It does it noticeably in 1 & 2 gear. The engine has 7k. I don’t know what it could be (fuel filter). Any comments? It’s going into storage in a few weeks.

What year? What mods? What if anything was recently done to the car?

We need INFO! :-)

challer2000 10-26-07 12:08 PM

Sorry
I can’t believe I forgot to include it.

1980 LS no modes stock, reman put in 03. Just replaced spark plugs and air filter

I don’t notice it when I use seafoam but it comes back

You need to inspect the levels in the float bowls and check the operation of the accelerator pump.

challer2000 10-26-07 12:32 PM

Is there a write up on this? So I know what is should be set at.

Rx-7Doctor 10-26-07 01:25 PM

Down load a copy of the carb manual per member trochoid link in his profile signature.

challer2000 10-26-07 01:41 PM

I have the link. I have been looking at it and it looks hard. How difficult is it? I might be better off taking it to a shop.

Thanks
Chris

When looking at the floats can I just take off that lid and look. Or is it more complicated than that?

Rx-7Doctor 10-26-07 02:37 PM

Come on Chris, you are not even trying to help yourself.

You view the fuel levels thru the sight glasses, it's all listed in the carb manual. There are also many threads in the archvies on carburetor issues. :-)

challer2000 10-26-07 03:19 PM

Sorry

I was looking at the wrong manual
I found both the float level and accelerator pump guides.
Thanks

I'll check my carb when I get out of work

challer2000 10-29-07 12:22 PM

Both floats and the accelerator pump were working correctly.

I think I might go to the fuel filter next, before checking hoses for a vacuum leak. But they should have replaced any bad hoses when the engine was replace I think. Unless there is any other advice that someone can offer?

Hang on a minute here.... Didn't he say "the tach keeps going up, but I get no power" (slight translation)?

Clutch is slipping, if that's the case. Right?

Good catch. I read it but didn't give it another thought. Well see we he comes back on.

sp00led 10-29-07 03:01 PM

definitely a clutch problem from what you describe. My buddys celica started doing the same thing and it got to the point where he could only go 25 in 5th gear cuz the clutch slipped so bad and he was at 6k.

challer2000 10-30-07 07:43 AM

Clutch problem? Could be, when the engine was replaced in 03 I only put on a new pressure plate. Maybe its the flywheel?

The best way I can describe it…. I start going from dead stop 1st gear and 2nd good acceleration around 2k to 3k little acceleration but after that the tach goes up like normal (when you have the pedal to the floor), so I just give it a little more gas and the problem corrects it self. The tach only goes up about three hundred RPMs before problem stops. But shifting from any gear to another there is good clutch proformance.
But the weird thing is when I run a fuel adjective (seafoam, carb cleaner or octane boost) problem goes away. And now that I started running premium the occurrence is less frequent.

The problem comes and goes. When I start having the problem I just give it a little more gas and it stops.

Any thoughts?

Ahh, that sounds like a different issue then. Where in Michigan are you? Also, how old is your fuel filter?

challer2000 10-30-07 08:56 AM

I live in Bay City in between Saginaw and Midland. I have no clue how old the Fuel filter is. And for an $6 part that should take 20 minutes to swap out I might try that next.

challer2000 10-30-07 09:00 AM

I also replaced sparkplugs and Air filter this year thinking it might have something to do with it.

I’m going to replace the fuel filter this week. Here is the link to advanced auto parts

http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductL...or=Fuel+Filter

They have the purolater in stock any other they have to order for me. Do you guys have any information on any of these fuel filters which one is better.

challer2000 10-30-07 09:44 AM

It would not let me edit (free up)

Her is the link for Auto zone

http://www.autozone.com/selectedZip,.../selectZip.htm

Both these places are right around the corner so I can pick it up in the store. Which one should I get from 1 of the 2 shops

Kentetsu 10-31-07 10:40 AM

Either filter should be fine.

If you are up for a road trip, there will be a number of rotorheads at Knoll Gas Motorsports Park which is just south of GR on Saturday. Last autocross of the year. But if you want somebody to check it out first hand, there will be a bunch of us willing to look it over for you...

challer2000 11-01-07 07:31 AM

The replaced fuel filter fixed the problem.

Kentetsu
I might be able to make it Saturday. I have class till 1:00 PM that day.

Thanks again for all the help everyone!

Kentetsu 11-01-07 07:58 AM

Here's a link to the information on the event. Hopefully you can make it.
