Weighed my SA today!
I went to the truck scales and weighed my '80 today.
The car has had the A/C removed, and the thermal reactor, air pump and ALL emissions equipment has been replaced with a RB header and mini-presilencer. The weight is with a half-tank of fuel, and the spare tire and jack, etc. in the car. The weight without me in the car was 2300lbs. 1060lbs. on rear axle. 1240lbs. on front axle. The following corner weights were with me in the car. LF=640lbs. RF=580lbs. LR=560lbs. RR=540lbs. :D -WG |
Very good Wankelguy. 2300 is not bad at all, but those front corner weights . . . well nevermind that, it is not like it is a race only vehicle.
|
So is the car with full interior? And are you planning on stripping it down?
Be sure and weigh again if you do! I'm curious what kinda weight I'm looking at for my car :D |
relocate battery to the rear.
|
upgrade your bumpers, put the 81 bumper skins, you save 80 pounds! also cut out the dood supports, yhose are worth 40 pounds each
|
Without doing any structural cutting (next on the list; backside of the bumpers and door supports, mmm air grinder) my SA weighs 2160 with 1/4 tank of gas. The interior was pretty much stripped from the dash back, I still had an amp in the back but it wasn't worth removing. I kept the amp so I could at least have a pair of 6x9's for the winter, but now that my "budget" (mar3 you out there?) Carter is installed I can't really hear is so well. I LOVE MY PUMP !!!!

Mine is 2250lbs
84GS With full int.. Do you think I can get it down to about 1900 with the same steel skins? |
those cornerweights are nicely biased for a right hand drive car :)
edit - if you weigh 4 1/4 stone that is ! (still its better than if it were LHD) |
:p:
|
My '80 has a full interior, and I've spent quite a bit of time cherrying it out. It's currently my daily driver, so I'm not planning any serious weight reduction regimen.
Besides, I only weigh 120 lbs! I'm building a '72 RX3 for autocross that will be much lighter, anyway. Then there's my '74 RX4 project... |
Why can't Felix Wankle be more like you?! LOL.
The next car I buy is a Rx-3 or a Alfa Romeo 155...full blown track car. |

I've had this beautiful seam-welded, rust-free, freshly painted '72 RX3 for about 5 years now, just sitting in the garage waiting for me to get motivated to finish it. I spent about two years hunting down the best parts I could find. I've already rebuilt/cherried-out most of the components, including: -Factory rebuilt '74 12A (largest stock ports!) with 17K miles. -Rebuilt 4-speed "ribcase" transmission. -Unused NOS Koni shocks for all four corners. -Shortened RX2 front springs(not the best, but it's what I got.) -RX2 front bar (ditto) -Uninstalled GSL pumpkin for the repainted rearend. -Dash and console components are in the finest condition I've ever seen. -Custom RX3 header with lots of idler arm clearance (!) -'81 electronic distributor to eliminate breaker points. All it needs is to be assembled, but there it sits while I dink around with this RX7 that sat for ten years that someone gave me. Then there's my '74 RX4, which basically just needs a motor. I had bought the body and converted it from AT to MT, then installed a used motor that ran for two days before it started puking fresh Valvoline out of the rear rotor's exhaust port. Meanwhile, the RX3 sits in the garage, mocking me... |

Updating the front bumper alone will leave a gap on the underside, however I think if you also swap fenders that problem is avoided. But that's starting to sound like a lot of work (removal, fixing and painting new fenders) for a small gain. I like my 80 style bumpers too. I've heard that grinding part of the backing of the bumper can yield similar weight loss.
Someone at one point compiled a list of parts people had and their individual weights...who feels like hunting for it? |
