WD-40 Vs ATF
 

Ok i Knew that my engine was going to sit for a long time so i didnt want it to git all sezed up cuz i ran premix befor i stoped runing it.........so i put about 2 cans of Wd-40 in it will that do any thing????Any thoughts????

..... I... dont know.. I just fear for the engines life, im not sure that was an application wD40 was meant for. Sounds dangerous

I'm just speculating here but I don't know if wd-40 works as a fogging spray, i've never read anything that said it did, and even if it does 2 cans would be way too much.

ive used wd40 for all sorts of things, including prestorage lube for my bmw motors

WD stands for Water Displacing, so what do you think that means? Quiz on Friday. While 2 cans is excessive, I wouldn't worry.

I think optimally you would pump in a bit of oil to each rotor chamber, rotate it around and let apex seals soak, then thru the exhaust ports push the apex seals in and out to make sure they are free on each apex of each rotor before starting it..

why not pour oil into the chambers - that won't allow rust.

I used fogging spray to pickle my 12a j bridge which is much thicker and tacky.

And sprayed it liberally with WD40 before turning it over by hand, and before starting it. There was suprisingly little smoke when it started.

WD will work for a while but doesnt it dry things out? i mean like i use it to dry out oil on my grage floor it will dry ANYTHING out i would never ever use it in a motor it will help but not for long

Definitely use fogging oil instead of WD40. WD40 is a solvent, and is also very thin so I wouldn't recommend it for engine storage.

If I were you, I'd start the engine, burn off the WD40, pour a tbsp or two of oil down the carb while it's running to get it lubed up in there, then shut it off and use proper fogging oil instead.

Me too. The soft seals were designed for oil. The other fluids like WD-40 and ATF could do more harm than good; especially if the engine is to be stored for a while.

lol I don't know why this ATF myth keeps coming back to haunt the forum every other week.

The ATF myth changes perpetually.

Most of the time it's related to removing carbon.. here it was for storage (God no... shouldn't use ATF for storage)... it *does* work to un-seize engines I can attest to that, but I'd only even use it for that as a last resort.

hold on now im confused. i thought the atf myth was a good thing for rotarys. and is the atf the same as MMO myth.

I'd rebuild an engine before I'd consider pouring in some ATF.

eh, not all of us have access to rebuilds though :P

I've used MMO before, I like it. That being said, I've seen what it does when left in a pistons engines cylinders for a day or two and then fired. The crap that comes flying out the back is crazy. However, over winter? I'm afraid it would eat the engine from the inside out, its powerful stuff. I'd say just go with basic oil..
