I tried some local 2nd generation rx7's and was not thrilled......
I am still thinking about that 84 rx7 gsl-se that I did not purchase
17 years ago......So now I want to get one..... is this the best way to go or would a regular gsl model be easier to maintain?

What would you guys look for in a used 1st gen?

And what year is best....

I'm kinda partial to the GSL-SE myself (I have an 84). They were only made for the 84 and 85 model years, and are virtually identical.

I don't think the -SE is any harder to maintain than the GSL, but then again, I've never owned a GSL.

I'm curious as to why you don't like the 2nd gen? (I'm with you on this one, I'm just curious as to your reasons).

Anyways, if you're shopping for an old rex, you wanna make sure it runs strong. You wanna do a big inspection for rust, especially the underbody, wheel wells and under the carpet and storage bins. Maintinance records are a big plus so you can see how well it's been maintained.

Why I like the 1st gen..
 

The ones I looked at in my price range were really tired and did not have the feal of a 1st gen. I like the way I sit in a 1st gen.
I wanted a vert, but the ones I saw really show their age and I like all the little things to be clean and working....So I think the more simple and orignal lines of the first gen is for me...

Well, as I said before, my recomendation is to find an SE. The extgra 35hp is nice, plus the bigger brakes and gear ratios. Also came with more options standard than the lower models.

As the owner of a 1982 GS, I would like to offer a different perspective...

While the SE's do offer better brakes, LSD, and a bit more power in stock form, they are heavier and command a heftier price for a nice one.

If speed and handling are what you're after, consider a base 12A car with few options. When you eliminate power steering, air conditioning, power windows, etc., you end up with a quicker car. Not to mention, with a couple easy power mods you are more than keeping up to the SE.

12A's are way simpler and easier to work on, and you can upgrade them without having to mess with 6 ports that never open, etc. It is been suggested more than a few times that the 12A motor is the more reliable of the two.

Then again, maybe I'm just jealous I don't have a 13B:D

They're all fantastic cars, whatever you get, I know you'll enjoy it.

Neither my previous or current SE have had any problems with the aux ports, or really any major engine related problems.

Then again I take good care of my baby. Hell I take good care of my GF's Intrepid and I HATE that car. Guess I'm just a car freak.

Tho Silver is right about the weight. I kinda like my creature comforts, so my car has A/C and power everything ('cept power steering). It makes the car a tad on the heavy side, but it's still plenty fast and handles great, although it's not quite as nimble as some non-SE's I've driven.
