Want to customize - where do I start?

I have a 1985 RX-7. Runs okay, but now I really want to, as my dad used to say, soup it up! I'm looking to completely replace the motor, transmission, driveline and rear end. Redo brake system and fuel delivery system. Front end has already been redone. Would be willing to spend 10K, possibly more. Body is in good shape (one minor ding), but I also need to redo interior and replace sound system.

Now the question. Where in the world can I get all this stuff and get it installed? I was once a mechanic, but never again, so I want someone with a five star reputation.

Welcome to the forum!

Well, with 10k, you should be able to make it pretty nice and fast if thats your goal. So are you saying that you want to find someone to do all the work? If that's the case, 10k won't stretch quite as far if you did at least some of the work yourself. These cars as incredably easy to work on. In fact, they're a joy to work on. If I were you, I'd find a good engine builder to work with and do all the hands on work myself. But that's me. Good luck!

thats pretty much what I did. I found an engine builder in my area with a good reputation, and then did everything but the engine work myself. Everything I did for my NA setup probably only cost 4-5k, so you could definitely go to town with 10k. With that much, going with a turbo setup wouldnt be a problem, but finding someone to do that kind of work for you wouldnt be too easy. If you were going to stick with NA, I would suggest you first get a rebuilt and streetported 12a. Then go with an aftermarket carb, maybe a new weber dcoe, or possibly a rebuilt 48 ida. Then go through and buy all the goodies to go with your newfound power. Fuel, ignition, brakes, header/full exhaust. clutch, suspension, etc.. Just about anything you could want can be found at either racing beat or mazdatrix. I'm sure finding someone who could install all the parts you want wouldnt be too hard, since nothing is too technically difficult about such a setup. But like inittab was saying, these cars are great to work on, so give it a shot youreself. Just have fun with it!

If you are spending that kind of money, dont waste it on shitty headers. Make sure they go straight out from the engine 3" before turning to the back of the car. NOT RB, I think the company that is good is ISC or something like that, just search.

ISC ? Never heard of 'em.

www.iscracing.net

They have some cool shit, namely the rear adjustable spring perches. Note: Don't order them unless you order springs from ISC with them. You need 2" shorter springs, which they can supply for $48/each. Spoke to them on the phone the other day and they were nice enough. They seem to know what they're doing.

Don't forget Mindtrain either. Their headers ARE BIGGER THAN RB's and JUST AS THICK. They're 2.5" mandrel-bent and they flow real well.

Where can I find mindtrain products? I don't really want to buy, but the name's so cool, I've got to see what they offer.

if u really want a custom ride, u shouldn't b 2 far away from a 20b with that cash.

Mindtrain is silly for not having a website, but they don't yet, unfortunately. If you look up their number (they're in California somewhere), Fred, the owner, will send you a catalogue for free. Give him a shout, he's a really nice guy.
