The stock Nikki carb has a perfornance limit of about 140-145hp. You will need it upgraded along the lines of a Yaw to give up to 180hp. Budget say $300.

The stock fuel pump will not provide sufficient flow. A Carter or Holley ful pump, and Holley regulator is the way to go. go to Search to find threads giving views on which is best. Budget say $100.

you'll need a boost dependant fuel pressure regulator not a holley.

I keep reading about the malpassi units. That is for the turbo application...

That's naturally aspirated. With the bowl floats referenced to boost, the gas circuits should be able to keep up especially since you have to upgrade the fuel delivery system.

I'm sure by now everyone knows what I'm going to say next, so let's sing it together! Don't bother with the budget Carter, get a Mallory Comp110 and it'll launch harder!! (...insert Scooby laugh...) :p:

There is a cool mod that you can do to a holley that involves reversing the spring in the secondaries diaphram to open under boost. That way you can run your secondaries rich to compensate for boost! as long as you do no "get on it" you can just run on you primaries, then when you punch it and when boost is present the secondaries will open and all hell will break loose!! (kinda scary!) It shouldnt be that difficult to do, just take some "creative engineering" Anyone who ever said that turbo charging a carby 12a is not possible is crazy. Its just more of a challenge because it actually takes some creativity and time to make it right. Just my 2 cents :)

okay so you need a holley carb setup but you also have to change the intake manifold right?
Also where can i get my hands on one of those boost controled regulators?

Thanks,
Jason

Malpassi is the brand...

coldy13 06-18-02 09:32 PM

Ok, I've got a few questions.

1) How much boost can the 12a safely handle w/intercooler?
2) How hard is it to modify the Nikki to handle a turbo?
3) How much HP will it put out while still being reliable?
4) How much $$$ will it take to do it right?

peejay 06-18-02 09:42 PM

1. Anywhere from 5psi on up depending on who you talk to and the specific details. (Someone on Mazspeed is throwing significantly more than 5psi into a bone stock 12A...)

2. Not hard. You need to rejet it and either box it or get a bonnet. If you go with a bonnet you need to eliminate the secondary diaphragm and go mechanical.

3. All depends.

4. All depends!

coldy13 06-18-02 09:54 PM

Ok, let me change 3 and 4 a little then.

3&4) About how much HP can I get with spending $2000-$4000 on it.

Just another $250 and I'm out of debt with my parents(owed then about $3000 to start with, was spending some $ I didnt have), so I'm doing some research for what I want to do with my car. I plan on either importing a 12aT and adding an intercooler or making my current 12a a turbo w/intercooler, I'm trying to decide which will get me the best HP/$$$ and be the most reliable. My goal is to get about 200-250HP out of it.

peejay 06-18-02 10:29 PM

All depends! :)

Give me $500 and some time and I could whack together a mild SP engine and a junkyard turbo and there ya'd be. I'd do it myself but I don't have $500 kicking around :)

Buckfutter: Just though I'd let you know there is a guy in the city with a 12AT. I raced him last year, blow off valve killed my ear. Do you work at the parts counter at Canadian Tire? I've been there a million times in the past couple weeks looking for some damn t fittings.

Call up Soko in Chicago. They have good prices and service, now if only they can find you the engine.

buckfutter125 06-19-02 12:40 PM

ya i do work at the parts counter, anyways what does this guy with the 12a turbo's car look like?

Winnipeg85GSL 06-19-02 03:08 PM

I think he's Hispanic(it was dark)
the car is white with rust

I ran into this guy Sunday night. Not Hispanic (but I think his buddy is) and the car has zero rust (but it is white). It's an '83 GX (Canadian model). It does indeed have a turbo set up with a Holley carb and he picked it up off the Mazda dealership on Pembina last summer. I drove by that car several times and noted how clean it was but I never thought to check under the hood for a TURBO! I don't remember his name but I gave him the address to this site - hopefully we'll hear from him. Man those things are quiet with a turbo and the car looks totally stock (bet he's caught a few guys off guard) - if I had known it had a turbo, I would have bought it

Winnipeg85GSL 06-19-02 10:50 PM

Had crazy rust on the rear quarter last time I saw him, but who knows.

Can't be the same car - this one was very clean. Maybe all white 12A's come with turbo;)

buckfutter125 06-22-02 06:40 PM

well anyways, once i sell my two first gens i am going to decide on what to buy a second or another first gen? and if a first gen (preferably) i will put a turbo onto it. I also plan on getting the mariah mode one body kit for it.

Any suggestions?

nopistonsforjoe 06-22-02 10:22 PM

go to www.corksport.com they are in oregon and have jspec 12AT's in stock for about $930. i searched for a long-ass time before i found them but it was worth it. if only i had the money and time my seven would have a 12AT. check this site out though...they have 20b's too
