Value of a 79

Ok, the 79 i'm looking at has 42,000+ miles, paints faded, hasn't been started in a few years, all original except the tires, driver's seat is shot. there was no battery so i couldn't check the other electricals. how much would you guys value the car at and don't give me the what someone would pay for it crap. lets here some honest numbers you guys would pay and/or think its worth.

coldy13 03-28-02 10:52 AM

Hmmm, thats very low miles. I think maby around $1250. I'd ask him if you could check it out, like go over there with a battery and test other electrical parts.

jeremy 03-28-02 10:53 AM

anybody? i offered 500 due to the elbow grease needed and not knowing what will need fixing. the guy is a little hesitant as the sentimental attachment to it and he's not sure what it is worth.

jeremy 03-28-02 10:54 AM

thanks. i'll probably go higher on the price.

coldy13 03-28-02 11:25 AM

i wouldnt go by my price, get some other opinions too

jeremy 03-28-02 11:58 AM

i would but no one wants to say how much they'd pay.

coldy13 03-28-02 12:06 PM

well, i got my rx7 for $500, its an 85 with a 12a engine. Only thing wrong is needs a new trailing ignitor and ac needs new compressor. Other than that and paint peeling a little hood, it is GREAT condition. It has 125k miles, new brakes, plugs and plug wires, clutch and dist. cap and rotor, all new in 2000. Just trying to give you a little comparison and hopefully let u be able to judge what the car u are looking at is worth.

Barwick 03-28-02 12:34 PM

only $1250? That seems pretty cheap for a decent (running?) '79, it WAS the first year they were out.

riffraff 03-28-02 01:06 PM

i got my 80 for 3k. but it was in excelent condition inside and out with 60k on the motor.

just play the bargen game with the guy. if you donot know what is needed to make it run well, then i would definatly not go above 2grand.

jeremy 03-28-02 01:17 PM

sounds good guys. thanks for the tips so far.

hanman 03-28-02 01:40 PM

Two weeks ago, I bought a 85 GSL-SE for $500. It is in very good shape, running and body. Has the start of some troublesome rust, but nothing all the way through. I think five bills is plenty for the car. Yes, it is the first year, but so what. Should you pay more for one less mirror and an antique points style distributor? I wouldn't, and I own four rx-7's.
of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong,
hanman

ok, he talked me to 850. thats median to whats been said so i figured its a go. he's gentleman too so if something major goes wrong he'll probably refund some. he wants to be the first who's offered a chance to buy back when i sell it down the road since i plan on restoring it. sounded good to me. i want to thank everyone who helped and gave input. looks like i'll be here a lot for a while as there is quite a bit of work to go through.

Sounds like a good bargin I paid 800.00 for a 79 that would run I drove it home it had been sitting for awhile it smoked oil seals so i had it rebuilt runs great now i had to replace exh. with RB system Great little car now:cool:

gonzz 03-28-02 04:29 PM

If you think 850.00 is a good price get it...

Brian P 03-28-02 05:51 PM

Wow you guys paid alot for your cars, you're gonna hate me for telling you this.

6 months ago I bought 2, 79's fir $50.00, Fifty bux, One turned out to have a new engine and the other ran as soon as I got it a battery. My first 79, befire these two I got for $550, and my cousin bought his for $300.

Keep in mind these are Canadian prices, so just cut them in half and you get american $$$.

I would NOT pay more than 500 bux for any first gen. Anymore money and you can buy a 2G..

2g's can be ahd cheap... My t2 I bought for 800 bux (needed engine) and I just bought an 86 gx that runs perfect, in fact I'm going to insure it this weekend. Oh yeah it cost me $600..

RotorMotorDriver 03-28-02 07:06 PM

My 85 -SE was $1000 with no major problems, just some body damage. My 85 GSL was $500 with no problems AT ALL. Got it home, dropped a battery in, and fired it up. The 83 GSL was like $50, with 80K on the odo, but she needs a new engine. Hopefully I'll be getting one soon, I just sold some RB parts and the check is in the mail :D.

looking at the engine bay and everything. time attacked this car not miles. everything was pretty pristine once you cleaned the 6" layer of dirt and mud dobber nest off. i'll be putting up pics on my website tomorrow or saturday. he said the paint was even really good until he pulled it out of the garage for his bass boat. now all the rubber door seals need replacing, repaint, etc. new drivers seat.

I really lucked out when I got my '80. I had asked my boss if it was an abandoned car, since it had been sitting behind the complex where the store is as long as I had been employed. He told me it was his wife's car. A week later, the property manager asked him to get it moved because they were about to build some new units. I guess since I had asked about it recently, I came to mind, and he offered to give it to me, as opposed to calling someone to haul it off. My wife said I had to pay something, so $100 became the figure. It had 52800 original miles and they had owned it since 81 at 3000 miles. The interior was in decent shape except for cracks on the dash, and the paint was extremely faded. After changing all the fluids, I attempted to start it, but I had no luck. That night, I found this board and just about every other RX-7 site, and learned the time honored ATF trick. The car now has 66000 miles on it, and is used for my SCCA exploits. I have really lucked out on parts for the car, as I have always stumbled into good deals. I bought a clutch disc and pressure plate on this board for $25. Turned out to be a Centerforce Stage 1 pressure plate and a Street/Strip Heavy disc. I have less than $100 in all 4 new Koni's and $130 in a new Eibach spring set. I managed to pick up the complete Racing Beat exhaust (header, pre-silencer, connecting pipe, and muffler) for only $250. This past weekend, I placed 6th out of a field of 8 at our first autocross this season. May not sound like much, but I was on street tires, and everyone that beat me were running race rubber. An improvement of just over 1 second would have got me 3rd. I can't wait to get some race tires. I absolutely love my SA22 and am so thankful for all of the help and good fortune I have received where it is concerned. Congrats on the '79. My only advice would be to buy some '80 front brake calipers and an '80 ignition/distributor. Also,if you figure out how to make the analog clock work post it on here. That is truly the only thing giving me grief on my car.

jeremy 03-28-02 07:38 PM

i'll work on the clock for you. i hope i have your luck on hop ups. that would rule.

mcnannay 03-29-02 01:27 PM

my dad got his '79 for $100 and its in great shape, besides the engine. Not a dent on it, immaculate interior only had 60,000 miles but its got bad seals, i wouldn't offer much for it unless you know it runs well.

85RX7GS 03-30-02 07:23 AM

I bought my 85 GS for $500. Not a bad little car. It might need a new engine though...

85rx7blue 03-30-02 12:25 PM

Id pay $700 tops.

jeremy 03-30-02 07:34 PM

ok guys, i already bought it so its a little null and void at this point.
