Unknown item - back of gauge cluster
 

I am not sure exactly how to describe it, but you should know what I am talking about. The silver box that attaches to the back of the gauge cluster. It appears to be some sort of electronic 2 way switch. I was just wondering what it was. It is connected to the cluster via a green wire and a green/white stripe wire.

Silver box? Sounds like the over-rev buzzer

Yep, the over rev buzzer. Mine is intentionally disconnected.

HAHA I HAVE NO over-rev buzzer. I can prove! BEHOLD the pics!!! Apparently, my 83 GS that had cruise, and A/C did not have the option of a buzzer. Possibly, the tach was swapped out, I have no idea. For sure, I am putting one in and unhooking the buzzer part (for a future project of my own).

Pic 1 is tach assy out of cluster (note that no electronics are attached to left side)

Weird. I guess the previous owner must have replaced the tach and got an assembly from a car that did not have the buzzer. I thought the buzzer was a standard thing though????? Just when I think I have something figured out, the 7 wins again!! I guess it really cant lose lol.

Edit - I have the buzzer, just no electronics to control it. Anyone want to sell theirs??? I would like to buy just the small piece. 82 streetracer, hook me up man (if you still have it).

OK, so how does the buzzer work? Is it a constant 12 volt signal or does the signal switch polarities to function? It seems after tearing it apart, that it would switch polarities (signal to it) to work. Anyone know?

Those pics look exactly the same as the way my '83 GS looked, and it had no buzzer. I figured it was just removed by the previous owner, but maybe it's actually a model difference.

That box is the "dinger" for when you leave your lights on and open the door when the engine is off.

Lovintha7, thank you. I recently went to the junkyard and I pulled out 3 gauge clusters from S2s and not 1 of them had the BZ (assuming buzzer) lead connected. As a last resort, I removed an S3 cluster and it was hooked up. I bought the S3 cluster. Also have a couple plans to part/sell the cluster now. I believe it should work, but I also have a new problem. None of my dash lights work. Would the reason be the different tach? I just swapped tachs as it was easier. I checked all fuses, connections, etc.

Mine don't work either. i've tried everything. Right now I'm looking for a piece of aluminum plate to make my own damn cluster. Fuggin electrical demons. I'm going all Autometer gauges mounted in a custom drilled and mounted piece of aluminum. Bye Bye speedo
