Unexplained issues...Help please!

I have been having issues since I bought my 1983 GSL. First problem....
I have gone throught the entire vacuum line diagram and still have throttle issues....Here is the problem (I have no vacuum leaks and all belts intact and working properly)When I start the car in the morning not only does it start slowly but if I press the gas pedal in at all when starting it wont start, and after it starts if I press on the gas it will die. After it warms up I have to press the gas ever so lightly until it winds up to about 2000rpm (If I just press the gas in regularly or quickly the car will die, warm or cold). I have a new fuel filter, newer carb, and I run chevron 87 octane (lowest I can buy). I have been told that this could be contributed to a bad acclerator pump but have tried 2 pumps with the same results. Could timing, plugs, rotor, cap, and wires be contributed to this problem? Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide some assistance. Thanks again. Robust.

Well, first off, you probably should change your plugs anyway, if you bought it recently. Make sure to use NGK (I forget the number.)

You live in WA, so I imagine it gets quite cold up there. Make sure you're using the choke, which should bring the idle up nice and good.

I'm sure your carb is good, but doulbe TRIPLE check the wiring/hose diagrams. Take pics for us if you can, you never know what you missed.

As for the dizzy (distributer) stuff, I really can't help you there, you'll have to wait for someone who knows what they're doing with that stuff to come in.

Hey heres an easy one for you....... Get rid of all the emissions and then you won't have vacum leaks anymore :)

Hey the NGK is BEQ14 I think... They are the 4-spark ones...

Yo RM RIGGIN, GO post in the NW section and we can go look at your car and help you out....

I'm in Bellevue, WA

Sounds like your leading ignition might not be firing. Check for spark on your leading plugs...

Yes, but it does sound alot like an accel pump problem. Has the AP being adjusted properly?

Next, check timing. That includes making sure leading ignition is actually working.

Have not checked timing yet

I have not checked timing (not sure how to on rotary), and I wasn't going to do plugs wires cap and rotor until I give it a minor atf treatment to give it a bit better compression than it aready has (decent but can do better). I was unaware that the accelerator pump could be adjusted (how?). I do intend on removing emissions, and have the guide to do it but would rather hav someone help who is a bit more expirienced than I. I will post this in the NW forum also. Thanks for the suggestions I will try and post pics when my friend gets back from Germany with my digital camera.

moving the nut at the end of the rod that actuates the accel pump.

Here's a pic.

Seriously though, check for spark at your leading plugs. Failure of your lead ignition will produce exactly the symptoms you are describing. I'm not saying that there is nothing else that would cause it to act that way, but its pretty simple to check and eliminate as a possibility. Take five minutes and check it out, it may save you some trouble down the line looking into other, more complicated, possibilities.

Just pull the wire from the bottom front plug and crank it over. If you have spark, stop listening to me and pay attention to cdrad51 (who definitely knows his stuff)....:)

I got another question for you all. Are speedo cables known to snap (I believe mine is)? I checked the gear in the tranny and th cable going into the gear that is supposed to turn the speedometer. The speedo gear is good, the interior cable was hooked in correcty to the back of the dash and to the speedo gear. Is there a good chance that the cable broke off somewhere inside the insulation or is it more likely that th sppedometer is bad.
Scratch that, I just disconnected the speedometer from the back of the dash to see if the gear spun when I took a drive.....cabe wasn't spinning. Now that I have it somewhat figured out, where can I find a speedo cable? The parts stores I called don't carry it (shitts, oh I mean shucks, autozone, napa) Mayb I will give CRAP (cut rate auto parts) a call).

I'd say how about you start your own thread on this completely different subject

rmriggin 01-26-05 08:13 PM

Thought about doing that, would make since huh!? sorry, I have been doing some searches trying to find the info I need. Thanks for your suggestions, things are getting better. I just didn't want to repost something that may have been covered already so I added it to my existing post...sorry.

cdrad51 01-26-05 08:19 PM

Well it's alright, except when you clearly label the thread with the problem it makes it easier in the future to search it and find it, rather than labeling a thread "problems with my car" and then unloading there all the different problems in the different systems in your car, you know what I mean?

rmriggin 01-26-05 08:25 PM

I gotcha, thanks, this wil be a good future reference to getting fast answers to threads. thanks again.

I finally got a chance to really take a look at my carb and what I thought was the accerator pump was not. That pic helped a lot, now I know what the problem is really.....the acellerator pump inkage is non existent!. The pump is there but the linkage is gone. Luckily I have a spare nikki that I can use the linkage from. Now I got to pull of the carb and get that likage hooked up.

man you got lucky. Glad it worked out in the end.
