Uncapped tube off of oil filler?

I changed the oil in my car today and when I was pouring oil into the filler tube I noticed that there was oil dripping out of the side of the filler tube through a small tube that was just open. Below you will see a picture of it. I've lightened up the background so you can see exactly what I'm talking about. It's a 1980 GS, but it's the engine is not the original (as I'm sure you notice from the beehive oil cooler). If I remember correctly the engine is from a 1983. My plan is to just cap off the tube so that it doesn't leak any oil, but I'm just wondering if it goes to something that I should hook it back up too. I've been running with a light premix, so I'm not too terribly concerned about if it goes to the OMP, but if it is something important I would rather know before there is a problem.

Thanks,

Noel

don't cap it off, there are a few write ups on how to re-route it, but i would just leave it open, air needs to escape there.

I see, maybe I'll just get a short piece of tubing and point it up a little bit so that it doesn't drip out when I pour oil in. Thanks

I wouldn't just leave it open because it would alow dirt to get in the motor. You need to put some kind of breather or air filter on it. Or if you still have the charcoal canister on the pasenger side of the car than hook it to that.

That should have a hose going to the carb or any other vacuum source. It is for crankcase ventilation and must have a vac source or you'll get moisture buildup in your oil. Putting a breather filter would have pretty much the same effect as capping it. Check mazspeed. com for the de-emission tutorial. You'll find the correct way to hook it up there.

it is an important hose that should not be capped. here is a pic from the fsm regarding that hose and its proper location.

That only shows one line coming off of the filler neck. There are two. If you look at the pic above you will see that one is connected to something, but the other one is just open.

Sounds like I just need to get a piece of tubing and a breather to fit on the end and call it good since the charcoal canister is no longer in the car. That way it will still breath, but it won't drip when I put oil in it.

Thanks,

Noel
