Um, Mitsubishi part in my 7?

So there I am, ripping crap out of my car (I'm now at Stage 26 weight reduction :) ), and I come across a little electrical box thingy. It was mounted on the frame, right underneath the driver side storage bin. It is about 4 in by 8 in. There's a spot to plug in some wiring on one side and a bunch of numbers on the box itself. Then there was a little mark (here's the kicker) etched into it. It was three diamonds touching at the tips, EXACTLY like the Mitsu symbol. Very odd to find. Anyone know what this is?

Mitsubishi makes lots of electronics for many auto companies... if your car still has the original alternator, take a look at it.. should find the Mitsu logo there, too...

It was a secret covert operation by Mitsubishi. They installed the boxes so they could tap into the RX-7 owners brain, to see why they enjoyed their RX-7s so much, so they in turn could build better sports cars, guess they never worked, since thier cars are still lame. hehe

I imagine one of you is right, but since mitsubishi cars do suck, I can't decide who. (this statement excludes the non-imported EVO, for which I would trade my left testicle)

peejay 03-28-02 12:18 PM

Yep, Mitsubishi made most of the electronics on the car. IIRC the brake calipers are also Mitsubishi.

Most Japanese cars have components (electronics as well as other hardware) from Mitsubishi, or Hitachi. Plenty of stuff interchanges between Subarus and Datsun/Nissans because of this... you might as well stamp "Made by Hitachi" on those cars! :D Also, the Hitachi alternators in some Subys are almost a direct swap for the Mitsubishi alternators in RX-7s, only the diameter of the pivot bolt is different!

Oh, one other brand... Nippondenso. Although, IIRC (a little fuzzy) that stuff is mainly found on Honda products.

LMAO, my TV is a Mitisubishi, I wonder what it does in the 1/4 mile j/k ;)

RXcetera 03-28-02 01:46 PM

Nippondenso is found growing on Toyota's everywhere too ;).

These company are very large manufactuing company with MANY divisions. They manufacture everything for everyone.....so, dont be suprised!

peejay 03-28-02 02:09 PM

Funny enough, I have a 42" Mitsubishi TV... I figure it would do 18-19 seconds in the quarter if you tied it to my car :D

(btw that huge-ass TV fit entirely into my little Subaru... the tailgate closed and everything!)

You probably just found an amplifier for the factory stereo, they were also located under the carpet under the passenger side seat.

RotorMotorDriver 03-28-02 07:40 PM

If it's goldish in color, it's not an amp, it's the cruise control computer :). Just in case you were wondering what it was :).

I think the 12a engine computer is a mitsu part too. :)

Pittdp 03-29-02 01:21 AM

Our cars have mitsubishi starters, alt's, igniters, coils, just to name a few, these were all origainal parts on the cars.

Powerslave 03-29-02 02:41 AM

My Rotor button has a mitsubishi symbol on it....could be why it dont start often lol

lol.. quite possibly

OtakuRX 03-29-02 04:36 AM

Mitsu also made all of the emissions control electronics.

DONNA 03-29-02 06:00 AM

My uncle worked for the mitsubishi plant in japan in the 1940's, he was a POW there for three years, he gets the hebies whenever he sees a mitsu drive by, had some awful experiences there he says. damm shame america cant build a car as good as the japanese do.

crafoo 03-29-02 02:19 PM

Ahh man. That really sucks Donna. Sorry to hear it. My grandfather had a couple choice words to say about Japan and WWII when I got him on the subject. Hopefully the new generation of Japanese make a difference over there. Things do seem to be changing.

We shouldn't ever forget the warlords running the place during WWII didn't speak for all Japanese people. They were bent on dominating all of Asia, and anything else they could. Ask the Chinese how nice the Japanese are and you'll get a real interesting answer :D

Anyways, they might make a lot of cars but we shovel software and processors down their throats like there's no tomorrow. :)

MIKE-P-28 03-29-02 06:59 PM

Funny thing is it seems to be more Japanese cars/truck being built here now... Near me some 60 miles away, thats the Toyota's Princeton, IN plant. They make T-100, Tundra, and the Sequoia... Now in my very town Dana Mfg. makes the frames for the toyotas... also shift a little towards georgetown, KY and they build certain Honda's there, im not sure which one but I think Accord is one of them? Also there are building a new place that will make wiring harness' for almost all toyotas. Over in morgantown, KY there Sumikomo Wiring they make wiring harness' for Hondas too :)

And all these places pay big bucks, I think Dana is the lowest paying one and they start at 10/hr

peejay 03-29-02 07:20 PM

It's still a lot cheaper than Japanese labor (or German for that matter) similar to how we make stuff in Mexico because the labor is cheaper there.

MIKE-P-28 03-29-02 07:52 PM

Furthermore what really sucks is Toyota must have some weird people do the hiring, cause I have been trying to get a job there for about 6 months. I have been in car stereo for over 12 years professionally, I have extensive knowledge in automobiles wether by electrical or mechanical, I can paint cars do bodywork I mean Im qualified as HELL, and they just hired a friend of mine, hes a nice guy but doesnt even know how to change oil IM SERIOUS. I just dont get it :wtf: I want to get into that 18/hr :)

85RX7GS 03-30-02 07:12 AM

I believe that the majority of the car's electronics were made by Mitsubishi because of their knowledge in the electronics field. Mazda concentrated more on the design of cars and their engines so you won't find any Mazda electronics under the hood. :)
