to turbocharge or not to....

well, its just an idea. but i my friends brother is getting an all new engine for his turbo. so he would be selling the engine, turbo, IC...... all that. i would need to get the stuff to make my car EFI compadable. the engine might be had for $500. id get it rebuild, ported, and get race bearings (probably) which would cost about $2000. how much total do you think this project would cost? if the price is right i might be interested. for now my plans were to get the engine rebuilt, ported, and the car painted black.

lemonade 07-23-04 12:10 AM

id have a really new clutch, headers, and a dellorto with racing beat upper and lower intak manifold to sell, so that might make a difference with the money

lemonade 07-23-04 08:38 AM

no one???

RotaryRyan 07-23-04 09:04 AM

Its kinda hard to say, i think. It matters how you go about things. Say if your the kind of person that fabricates, fixes own problems, and knows alot this stuff, it would be cheaper.

Would you rebuild it? Port it?

FB II 07-23-04 01:46 PM

yea, he said rebuilding would be in there. honestly, if i were you; i would get it.. carb it... be done. :D

XLR8 07-23-04 04:19 PM

Blow-through carb setup.
You wouldn't need race bearings unless you are reving above 8k....Usually for Bridgey NA's.

The real question is do you have the tools, time, money, and know how to do this. Remember it will ALWAYS cost more than you think, so would you regret it if you started getting into some money.

Apart from the intake setup and rebuild, you could do this for relatively cheap. Note: using your tranny and fabricating much.

FB II 07-23-04 04:41 PM

do it man. totally do it. now that i'm on the verge of getting mine boosting (fuel pressure issues to be worked out) i am more stoked than ever!!!!! it will so be worth it, anyone with a boosted rotary that has also owned an n/a will tell you, you will never go back! :D

lemonade 07-23-04 05:43 PM

i dont think im interested in a blow through set up. i was leaning more towards EFI because i want to be able to drive it more. and for 4 or 5 monthes i cant, becuase its too cold. i do love the amazing throttle response on my carb though.

i dont have any knowledge for doing it myself. so i'd be getting it done at my local rotary shop. most of it atleast.

what all is involved with fabricating? there basically isnt anything left that isnt necassary in the engine bay. i was thinking it might be nice to fabricate the stock IC with side tanks, and mount it in front. there's more pressure down there anyways right?

also, right now im making close to $200 a week, but ive got untill winter to earn the money. i wont be making $200 a week for long though.

peejay 07-23-04 06:58 PM

Hey, I'm taking home roughly $200 a week... and I'm paying almost $400 a month rent, about $100 a month in car insurance.... :)

coldy13 07-23-04 07:03 PM

I turbocharged my car on $150 ever 2 weeks :) But the only expense I had was insurance. Taking home $350-$400 a week now, but have to save a lot for college.

lemonade 07-23-04 10:41 PM

do you guys have any idea how much it will cost if labor is about 60 dollars an hour?

peejay 07-23-04 11:39 PM

Waaaaaay too much.

82transam 07-23-04 11:51 PM

yea, far too much, not worth it. Also, why can't you drive it in the cold? carbs work fine in the cold if you let them warm up a bit. FI is nice, but carbs are too. just a thought

backofdabunny 07-23-04 11:55 PM

lemonade,It must be a friend or a bad mechanic to only be charging 60 bucks an hour for that kind of labor.just to rebuild an engine(piston,4cyl) rings, machining, seals and gaskets, machining the head, valves, plus assembly and dissassembly your talking over 2,000 for all the labor involved.cause that would be an hourly job they would MILK! Now throw in it's a rotary, specialized training is needed for that so I would guess tack on about another grand for your job.not to mention they will inevitably screw something up that YOU will have to pay for.Trust me,At least in my area of ohio it's 73 bucks an hour for a rebuild job, plus most places wont let you buy your own parts.SO MAKE SOME CLOSE BONDS WITH A MECHANIC! know them, love them.Because they can have you by the preverbial balls baby.(I used to be a mechanic,I know)He He He!

lemonade 07-24-04 02:37 AM

im going to a rotary specialist. he charges $1500 only, for a 13b rebuild. $1200 for a 12a. port is $300 more. these are set prices. other labor. like fabricating the car for fuel injection is $60 an hour.

anyone know how much labor is involved for making all fit together?

backofdabunny 07-24-04 02:53 AM

where is this place/person at?I might have keep them in my black book of fair mechanics(its a small book) I would say that sounds fair though.just dont let them know they could charge more!

1sgen 07-25-04 02:46 PM

i am using a microtech for engine managment .it works great
love it

lemonade 07-25-04 05:00 PM

how much did you pay got iy?

lemonade 07-26-04 05:02 PM

i just talked with my mechanic about it. he seemed to think i could do the swap myself. he would rebuild the engine, port it, and fit the TII oil pan to the GSL-SE front cover, and take everything that isnt needed off. can someone describe what's involved after that? i need to get a stand alone ECU? the wiring harness? let me think. there are fluids. i can get the oil to the cooler and back. i can get the coolant through. gas? i would be getting the fuel pump. what's involved in hooking up the main fuel line? are there return lines?
spark....do i need to change my ignition set up? premix will work? nothing there. what am i forgeting? i know it's a lot but thanks if you can help

lemonade 07-26-04 05:34 PM

would you want my nuts...

if i put a TII engine in my car? if i can find one, it'll off to my mechanic for a rebuild and port. and then off to my car to be put in. ohhhhh yessss
