Turbo Tech
I have always wondered how to determine which turbo is right for your engine. Can anybody explain or point me in the right direction? I was thinking more on the lines of my 83 12a and my 71 duster. I would appreciate all help.

^^^It really depends what you want. But the single turbo section would probably be more helpful.
What are your hp goals? When do you want to reach full spool? Porting? What boost? How much money do you have? There are tons more questions... |
Small turbo, little lag and good midrange. Comparable to a supercharger but without the parasitic loss. Big turbo, more lag, explosive top end , much more top end than a supercharger. (potential to really "push" you into the seat)

stock 12a use a stock TII turbo. the motor simply won't flow enough air to need anything bigger. if you get a streetport then go with a TRUE 60-1 and you can make 400rwhp and have hardly any lag.
but as said... all depends on what you really want. |
The proper way is by looking at the compressor maps of various turbochargers.
This is done by calculating the airflow requirements of the engine for your hp goal and then making sure it lands you in the meat of the efficiency range of the turbo for your specified boost pressure. |
I don't have much money and don't plan on racing. I am looking for power and efficency. I would like to yank one out of a junk yard and make 100 hp from it. I don't know about boost psi or spool. I guess spool in low rpm range like idle - 3000. Low boost psi so I don't have to try and figure out how to change the comp ratio on the engine. I wll probably do this when I rebuild the 12a and probably street port intake and exhaust. Also not looking to lose any gas economy.

I am not looking to do a damn search. I am looking to recieve input. I do know what I want but lack information. Its obvious that porting will reduce the gas mileage but how much. I also know oabout the FAQ's and doing searches in the forum but I don't have time for that. And like I said I am looking for info in the specifics. Besides if your just going to say do a search don't waste my time and especially yours. Its like saying "hey man should I stick my hand in the garbage disposal and flip this switch", and your dad says" I don't know, should you". Give me a fricken break. :buttslay:

There are many options/routes that one can go when doing a turbo upgrade. However, not posting goals and the 'I don't have time to search' attitude is not going to get you far.
With that said, a 2nd gen turbo is probably the easiest to do. The rest is up to you. |

Seriously though, by the sounds of it your best bet would be to rebuild the 12A and do a blow through turbo using a TII turbo and Weber carby. That's all you're getting. You'll find more than enough info by clicking the search button.

Fwiw, I had a 71 Road Runner, bought it used in 73. One of the best and most fun cars I have ever owned. Unfortunately, between being married, putting the ex through college, having 3 vehicles and the gas crunch, it was replaced by a new 75 Civic. Still wish I had the car, it would be worth many times what I paid for it now. As a side note, I have done extensive reading on multiple 7 and rotary related forums. This has given me a fairly decent knowledge base and allowed me to help others on the forum. I am more than willing to help others whenever ever I can, if I have knowledge on the particular subject. Doing so has given me a fair amount of respect here and a good deal of satisfaction. The more I learn, the more I realise how little I do know and still need to learn. I even help the 'wankstas', and members with attitues, to a point |

I have a N/A 7 and a Turbo Civic...
"Slapping" a turbo is not as easy as it seems. If you need to ask, probably is not for you. That said. Get a compressor map. If you dont know how to read it.... probably this is not for you, unless you wanna spend the next couple of months bench racing. |
