turbo II or cosmo block? which one is better?
I am gathering parts for my engine swap. I have my TII tranny and my new 13b header. and a atkins 7in supercharger will be comming soon.
I have decided to run the a low compression engine. But I was wondering. should I go with a TII block or a cosmo block. I have heard the cosmo has better port timing. what makes the cosmo block better? and is it harder to swap than a TII block? |
A cosmo block is basically and improved REW (third Gen engine) with less hassles on installing into a FB than an FD engine.
They are thicker near the dowels, have improved oiling and cooling, and much better port sizing than than old 13BT. |
Um i think the RE pre-dates the REW, but it should be better then a S4 TII. The S5 TII is also thicker near the dowels..
I have read there is almost 0 difference between the S5 TII block and the RE and REW besides ports. So if you port a S5 block it will be nearly identical.. And any of the block bolt right into a 1st gen if you change out the oil pan and front cover.. -Zach |
What about my oil cooler lines.
Will they work on both engines? and I would have to bolt on my 12a front cover and get a RB engine mount right? |
I dont plan on rebuillding the motor when I get it so better ports are important.
how much of a HP difference would there be, at, lets say 10lbs of boost. |
Well, you need to realize the S4 & S5 blocks come with a single turbo and the S5 has a better turbo.
Now the REW and RE engines come with twins.. The RE & REW would have to be converted to run in non-seq. If you don't plan on building the engine, and keeping whatever turbos it comes with i would go with the 13B RE. -Zach |
BTW the REW is probably better, but costs alot more too..
-Zach |
Here are the differences between the 13BT and 13BREW (and RE) engines.
He wanted to run a supercharger anyway, so he won't need the twins. Up to about 400 HP, just about any 13B block will do. Porting will equalize any advantages any one engine's port sizing has over another. Once you go with Higher HP (400+), you want the beefier cast RE and REW, especially if you're gonna dowel pin the engine. A Supercharger won't get you to 400HP on a rotary anyway. So just get the newest, least milage one you can get, since you're not rebuilding it or porting and you should be fine. :) |
i am not going to use anything but the block. I am going to run a atkins 7in. so the turbos, manifolds, TB, sequencial doesnt matter.
just the differences in the block. I am leaning tward a TII block because of cost and availanbility. |
I would opt for the S5 block, but an S4 block would suit you just fine..
And be a little cheaper.. -Zach |
yeh just the block.
I will probably never exceede 15psi. I have been looking and buying a jspec engine from cork and parting out everthing I dont need. |
Um, i think cork is a little pricey, how much do they want for a TII block
Usually S4's go for ~$550 and S5's go for ~$750.. There are tons of engine imports, check around.. -Zach |
damn, they want like $900 for a s4 and 1100 for a s5
they do a bunch of tests on them but that seams pricy. Anyone want to recomend a importer? or have a block to sell. |
Check these:
http://www.nippon-motors.com (750-950) http://www.jspecjdm.net (call) And i thought teamfc3s.org use to sell engines, but can't find the info.. -Zach |
C&T International
Do a search. |

Speaking of a 7", my friend and I just installed one in his REPU that has a GSL-SE engine in it. 9.4:1 rotors. I wonder how long the SE engine will last :)
|
I just saw something, s4 use mechanical oil sending units, and s5 use electrical, I planed on running premix so would a s4 work better. Or wouldnt that matter.
I am leaning tward s4 becuase I dont care for the better turbo or manifold |

It doesn't matter what OMP it had.. just block it off or convert it (either one) to RPM based..

one question here ... and i've never used or worked with a supercharger, so i may be a bit ignorant - so forgive me, but ...
wouldn't you want the higher compression ratio of the S5 13B-T for better streetability, since your boost will now be RPM-based, instead of exhaust-based? try the Gen II forum and see how much boost the 9.4 rotors can take ... i don't know, but i was thinking that though i agree you'd want to have lower compression for higher boost levels, i'm just wondering if the turbo 13B's have enough to keep you happy on the street. |
Personally, I'd rather supercharge with 9.2 or 9.0 rotors, but a GSL-SE engine is what the truck already had in it.

THe TII motor is built for boost, and I can spin the charger faster to make up for the lower compression.
